Has there ever been an ABS Hammer-In somewhere in the Mid-West? I see they are big in the south and east and far west. When will there be another so I can get in on some of the fun and frolic?

What gives?

Shane

Shane, we here in the midwest are forming a midwestern group of makers and plan a get together in possibly July and another Labor Day weekend. Dave Larsen and Steve Jennings are leading the march to form the organization, and I add my 2 cents worth. Give us a holler if you will, and please pass it along to anyone else you may know that would be interested. You are absolutely right about nothing going on here, and we are happily doing something about it. We have had a lot of interest and would look forward to hearing from you! This won't be an ABS ralated event, but we have to start somewhere. Our problem is, as you well know, the distance between makers in the midwest. Rare critters unite!

Shane and John
Sounds like a great idea. I would suggest that since Shane is in Wyoming and John is in Iowa, that you could come to my house in Nebraska! The only problem is I only have my homemade forge , homemade grinder and my comination stump with an anvil, hardy hole piece and vice. If you guys could pack your anvils and forges, I would have more than enough work space for a lot of people. We have two 2 stall garages, a two stall garage with a big workshop in front, and large work sheds on the farm. I have never been to a hammer in, but I know of some guys about 40 miles from me that have frequent hammer-ins. One of the guys has a nice shop with a power hammer, treadle hammer, and a big gas forge. They make stuff like dinner bells and black smith hammers and tools. They aren't really bladesmiths though. Then ofcourse there is Harlon Sudmeyer in Nebraska City. He is they only guy in the US who has the original blue prints to the Little Giant power hammers(he rebuilds them). He has a big shop, about 50 anvils for sale if anyone needs one, he sells coal by the palate, but I don't know if he want to sponsor something like this.
Keep me posted! I would love to watch a few pros and learn how to do stuff right!
Thanks
Luke

Luke, thanks for great invite! But I beleive ol' Dave is planning something near the Des Moines, Iowa area. We have folks interested from all over, and welcome everyone interested both to join, visit get togethers, hopefully both. Dave and Steve have sent out cards and letters to the folks we could locate, which is a very limited number because of not knowing the rest of the many isolated makers and interested, future makers. Many folks that would be interested are not on a forum nor have a pc,so we don't even know of them or how to get in touch. Rather frustrating, but the guys are making pretty good progress.

Thank for jumping in fellas!

Luke, Glad to see you stepping up.

Iowa is a long drive for me...but I'll pass it around.
Good to know somebody is thinking about this stuff...

Doesn't look like the ABS has much interest in this idea....not like we had anything here to offer in WY. Only Yellowstone...and the Grand Tetons...and you know boring stuff like that...oh and a lot of historical sites that have re-enactments and such. No not much here for people to see or do...probably was a bad idea for a Rocky Mountain Hammer-In and Rendezvous!

Though I did here of a man named Dunkerley who used to do something...but I think it's an invite only deal....

Keep me posted!

Ol' Dave Larsen, lucky dog, is at Blade Show. I'll know more when he gets back. Wyoming! I wish I was back there again! We have inquiries from other neighboring states, interest is really good. Thanks for your interest, and it would be super to have a hammer-in in Wyoming or in your neighborhood. Of course, I would have to take a few knives, guns and fishing gear along. too.

I'd be interested in showing up to something like this too if I can make time. bit of a drive, but think it could be fun
