Right now there don't seem to be any spydies
in VG-10 with G10 scales. Wouldn't that be a
logical combination? Fallkniven uses VG10 for
their abuse-taking outdoor knives (inspired by Spyderco's Bill Moran, of course!), and it sounds as though it's a bit less brittle (and expensive, and hard-to-sharpen) than the CPM440V that the military, centofante, native, etc. will all be in. Now all the folders in VG10 are Zytel (not as strong)
or micarta (slippery when wet).
Got anything planned with this combination?

The combination makes sense. Unfortunately, it appears that Spyderco is moving away from their G10 or micarta folders, to a large extent.
  • G10 Standard- gone.
    G10 Harpy- gone.
    G10 Rookie- gone.
    Wegner Jr.- gone.
    Renegade/Blackhawk- long gone.
    Calypso- gone.
    Calypso Jr. micarta- gone.
    Goddards- gone.
The only ones that I can think of that are hanging around that aren't stainless or FRN are the Wegner (full size), the Military, I think the Shabaria, the Starmate, and the the ... JD Smith {?}. Hmmmm.... actually, I guess I am totally wrong. They aren't getting rid of their G10 folders, just changing the line-up.

While I don't particularly dislike the FRN, I do dislike the pivot pin set-up on Spyderco's light weights.... But, that is a completely different topic. Anyway, good idea on the VG-10. I like that steel as well. More so, I believe, than the CPM440V.

Rockspyder,
Don't forget the G-10 Police model.
The logical next step in the evolution of the Police series.
A HUGE new favorite of mine.
That flat ground ATS55 blade is a cutting monster. I Love this folder!

BTW, The Shabaria is in Micarta.

Mr. Rockspyder

I think the Calypso Jr micarta has not been discontinued.

This is one Spyderco fan that is saddened by the move away from micarta and G-10 to FRN. I don't buy FRN knives, they just feel cheap.

I think that Spyderco is just dumping some old models for new stuff, and considering that VG-10 is a relatively new steel, it will probably be used in many more models in the future. I'm sure several G-10 handled, VG-10 bladed knives will be released in the next couple of years.

I would have to say that Cerulean is correct. the G-10 models that were discontinued was because of too many variations of a particular pattern and the dealer/distributor survey selected the Stainless Steel models as the ones to keep. G-10 is still a superior handle material and will certainly be used in the future.

We will probably move away from Micarta in favor of G-10.
