...and for you history nerds out there I'm not talking about eating babies. :P

After picking up Mainewoods' Lite Machete from him the other day to do some minor modding on, I immediately noticed the nonexistent retention of the sheath. There's a super simple manufacturing solution for this: Make the sheath an inch or so longer. Keep all the other dimensions the same.

The sheath is loose enough that the broadest part of the handle can fit snugly inside (tested by putting it in the sheath handle-first) and would do wonders to improve the retention of the otherwise very nice (for nylon) sheath without having a great affect on production cost. A longer sheath in that style would function much like Scandinavian-styled sheaths, or like the sheath of the Cold Steel Bushman. Retention is strong, yet construction is simple.

That is all. :D

That's a great idea 42. With that said, I bet the sheath is some generic 18" machete sheath they're getting from somewhere else. Now, if they could get a 20" machete sheath? Wheels be a turning.

I had the same problems with retention.
I got a piece of paracord, pulled it through the eyelet. Keep both ends of the cord even lenght. Run each end through a belt loop. I than put a cord lock on the end.
Now twist the cord, pull it over the handle, twist and pull back over the handle. Now tighten cord lock. The cord now crosses on both sides of the handle and holds the machete in place, centered in the sheath.
Unless the cord lock is utter crap, it sits pretty good.

I just added the ESEE6 Molle back to my lite machete sheath.
JV3 added the 3/4 molle back
both work great

Only problem being that that adds a lot to the price tag, and is a modification that wouldn't have to be made in the first place if the sheath was just 1" longer to begin with. Looks awesome though! :)

Agreed. A $45 5/6 molle back modification to a $3 sheath. Obviously more like to be done by someone who already has the molle back lying around, but you know'm sayin'.

It would be cool if the sheath had that extra inch, I agree. Although whenever I am using a machete it is almost never in it's sheath.

Lol, when I'm using a handgun it's generally not in the holster, but it beats carrying them around on a string. :D

Lol, I will agree with you on that one. Just saying the sheath of the machete isn't that much of a concern(at least not to me). Not as much as a knife would be. ;)

Ooh, ooh, pick me, pick me! Swift's letter was the 1st thing I thought of when I saw the thread title. In fact, I think I still have a copy of it from one of my classes @ Bible College

Also, just checked a 22" ontario sheath. It'll fit inside snug, actually the whole thing will go in. Very secure, but on drawing it cut the crap out of the inside leather band at the top. Not a method I'd probably use to carry. The stock sheath is fine by me for belt carry. I don't do a lot of jumping jacks with a machete on. I had the condor laying around, liked it, so I ordered one for each of my Lite's.

My cheap simple fix. I just generally lash mine to my pack. Loop of shock cord I had.

I like the Molle back idea But I too agree a little pricey, I am ordering a Leather 18'' El Salvador sheath from Condor $25 it has a swiveling belt loop, I like to see what Forty has come up with!!!!

I'm confused...I'm not doing anything to the sheath on yours!

I sharpened it up, squared the base of the spine, rounded the rest, and smoothed the ridges of the handle. It's all done!:)

you and i think alike sir! i did the same thing...had some leftover shockcord i never use....also like someone else said my machete is rarely in its sheath unless im resting.....ferns are an incredible foe!

Probably the best inexpensive retention solution at the moment. I commend thee, sir. :p
