After Brady's GTG, Rick and I spent a few days hiking around some trails in the Superstition Mountains area, I think Rick may have been out to kill me!

From the trail head parking lot at 1800ft

Our destination at 4800ft, the view is Weavers Needle which I believe is the core of an ancient valcano

I am originally from that region of the U.S. and hiked several of the trails you did many years ago. Beautiful country out there, but I have come to feel at home in the hills of WV.

Great pics, brought back lots of memories!

Awesome pics rob, you sure can take a hell of a pic no matter what the subject. Iv never been to the desert, or out west at all really except a few trips to socal. Id love to get out to that terrain and have some fun. Musta been great. You guys cut any boulders out of your way w your blades??! ;)

Great pics man, thanks for sharing!

What are you using for a camera these days?? Im due for a good cam. I honestly cannot believe how well my 10 mp camera phone has been treatin me. Its actually held me off from buying a real camera hah.

Thanks, I appreciate the compliments. All these pictures were taken with an iPhone 4. Knife pics I use a Nikon D80 with a Nikor 60mm macro lens which is terrific for knife photos.

It was a great time for sure! It was good to get away and relax as well as test some new gear and reafirm if gear I have been using is good for the task. Of course the knives taken we a pair of XM-18's. Being that these were just day hikes we didnt have alot of cutting chores that had to be done...but just having them as a backup is a confident feeling...Rob and I both learned a little about smaller day packs...what may look comfortable and tacticool may not be the best on the trail under load...in Robs case thank goodness for a sporting good store to find a second choice!...
One thing I always notice when I go on these hikes or any activity "off road" is that people are just plain clueless about nature and the realities of being out there...we started our treck on the one trail that was decent elevation climb...we came up on a family who had stopped for a water break and mind you this was not even a quarter mile into the trail...they were already starting to ration the meager water supply that they had...and you guys that live in a arid climate know how stupid it is to not have enough water!..in that end I carried a full bladder in addition to a water bottle with water!..will I need all of that on the trail that we picked for a day hike..no...probably not...but what if I fell and broke a leg while out there...will I need it then...you bet ya!..never skimp on water!
Another thing that I learned on this trip was the need to thoroughly learn your GPS BEFORE you head out on the trail! The best equipment in the world wont help you if you dont know how to use it! I'll put up some more pics of our trip as I find them!

This one is of me right after I almost stepped on a snake!....another lesson...watch where you are walking!

Excellent photos!

There is no late on images and activities like these. The World is beautiful if you take a moment to pause and embrace it...even the concrete bits. People, that's another story.

I'm really hoping you guys let us know a bit more about the gear. Footware choices and Rick's walking sticks??? Any info. to share?

Absolutely! We all love gear and I'm really thinking about doing in depth gear reviews in the future! but for now to answer your questions...I wear Keen footwear...mostly because I have really wide feet and the footwear by Keen works very well on wide feet...I bought a pair a Keen hikers a week before I climbed Mt St Helens last year and never had a problem with them! The hiking poles are Black Diamond....I highly recommend them! Very durable and light...they really help with stability on the rocky trails...I used them for my St Helens climb last year and fell in love with them!

Thanks, Rick.

I'll take a look at those items.

Look forward to any reviews you guys care to share!

Very nice pics! Have been to those areas many times and like you said I am shocked by the lack of common sense some folks have. That is some rugged country and it is real easy to take a fall or roll an ankle.

Wow, great pics! Rob, Rick, I'm glad you had a great time. I miss Arizona, I'm so jealous. Thanks for posting!

When I first saw you sticks I thought of my Leki poles, probably very similar. And what a difference a good pair of sticks make out there.

Glad you guys enjoyed the trip. I love Sedona, and make sure I head that way at least once a year for hiking and some great trout fishing in Oak Creek Canyon too. If you make your way out west again and haven't done it yet, check out Zion and Bryce Canyon National Parks in southern Utah, just north of Vegas. Angels Landing is one of the best (although rough) hikes I have ever taken.

I wear Keens as well (mt beloved Merrells simply aren't what they used to be) Walking Sticks (make my own ) Looking forward to Rick's gear reviews (especially bags) perhaps we can have a thread where we share tips/tricks and gear we have found we needed...(i.e. Black Gorilla Tape around a credit card )

Looks like you guys were near my super secret shooting range...I love the wild west!
