A more fully serrated Delica...

Hi Folks,

I've been looking at an old picture I found on 1sks.com, and it shows a Delica lightweight with a blade that is more fully serrated than that of the present version. What I am specifically referring to is the fact that this knife in the picture shows a blade with five large teeth, and five small pairs of teeth with the leading teeth being the first pair of small ones.

The current version has five large and four small pairs of teeth; as it is missing the leading small pair of teeth from the blade, resulting in a little longer plain edge portion present at the front of the blade.

I was just wondering if anyone here knew when this change may have taken place, so as to assist me in possibly finding one of the 5/5 versions by determining the approximate vintage.

You can view an image it at 1SKS here:

Thanks, Jeff/1911.

weird, could it be an endura?

1sks has some pic screw ups, check out the endura, last time i checked it was a pic of the military (notice the linner lock)

Jeff, both my pink Delicas (all were '98s) have the same serration pattern as on the 1SKS pictured Delica. Also note the 1SKS pic shows no reinforcement around the clip depression, so it too must be a '98 version. Maybe when Spyderco brought out the reinforcement rib around the clip depression they also changed the serration pattern? Of course it could also be a separate change after (or during) the '98s as well.

Is this the Delica??

Jeff:
The '98 Endura and Delica had a little more serrations and a little less plain edge near the tip. In 2001 when Spyderco reinforced the Zytel at the base of the clip they also eliminated a bit of the serrated portion closer to the tip, I believe, to make the tip a little bit more break-resistant. I have both a fully-serrated '98 and 2001 Endura, and the 2001 has a bit longer plain area near the tip. My '98 Delica serrated also is serrated almost to the tip, but they have all since been updated to fewer serrations.

Thanks for your response!

LizardKing - It must be a Delica by it's blade shape. The Endura has a quite a bit more rounded appearance to it's blade.

Safety Guy - I see from some pictures I have of pink Delica's what you mean, they are ground the same way. You are observant to notice that lack of clip depression area on the handle, I missed that. So a 98' version it is. Like you say; it may co-incide to the clip mod, perhaps not. I realize that a lot of these subtle changes in design are difficult to trace, but I think it's fun to try.

Blades - Thanks. I'll look into that. That knife does have the serration profile I'm looking for but the teeth look a little worn, I think...or is it just me?

Jim - So do you think that perhaps this blade style may be present on some of the knives produced in 2000? If so, I may still be able to find one in a store around here.

Thanks to you all for your help.

Cheers, Jeff/1911.

Jeff:
They might have still been made in 2000, I'm not sure...I'm sure they were still being made that way in '99. I've noticed lately when I go to stores or even at the gun show, all dealers I've seen don't seem to carry the versions with the extra serrations anymore. Personally, I prefer the way they are now, as the 2 or so extra serrations so close to the tip don't seem to help much in cutting...but for the sake of collecting it's quite fascinating these little variations that come about.

Jim,

The variations are most interesting.

I just kind of like the looks of this earlier more fully serrated looking blade; particularly on the Delica. I agree that they probably don't make much difference in effect though.

Thanks for your help with information on this.

Jeff.
