If this thread seems familiar, that's because it was here a few days ago- then mysteriously and utterly vanished. With the help of Coop, I found a cached copy and used it to regain the body of text, with links. I'm re-posting it here as a record of the work, for reference, although I was unable to regain any of the explanatory remarks regarding techniques, from the original thread. Anyone who wishes, feel free to ask about the construction, and if you already commented on the original, thanks again for the good feedback! -Salem

Here's the original thread:

Here's one of my latest.

10" mild k-tip gyuto in 6-bar explosion steel, 1080/15n20.
Integral bolsters in crushed w's keyhole fit to african blackwood handle.
Finial bolt in twisted w's.
11 oz. overall, .100" max spine, ground to .005" before sharpening.

Pics and a vid!

your signature text sums up your experience with a temporary ban and a disappearing thread quite adequately:D

it's nice to see this piece again, truly inspiring!

I figured it might have been a Halloween prank- I suppose it was, from the universe! I think it's got a new name, the All Hallows Gyuto!

Dam new Mods!!!!!!!!!! :D

That's a beauty, Salem. It's the little things, like your signature symbol. Did you inlay it, I'm puzzled.

It's all so clear now! I may have to trigger the remote self-destruct feature I built into his Kukri... ;)

David, the logo is electro-etched on first, then painted inside the circle with clear nail polish. The blade is then etched and parkerized, and the nail polish gets removed with acetone prior to finish sanding for contrast. Bruce Bump has been doing that for quite a while, looked so slick I designed that logo with the circle so I could do it too!

Great knife!

Some mod was probably sleep modding:eek:

Soooo nice. It's almost as nice as the keyhole gyuto that fellow Salem Straub posted up a few days ago!

Hehe~ :D

Just as before, I think it's amazing how, in the video, the blade rings so much from just turning it about by the handle. It really shows how "rigidly one-piece" and it is, how it sings in a harmonic way. Maybe that's something that's more common than I think in knives like this...but I'd bet it has something to do with the keyhole construction and the very hard wood used, with the perfect proportions.

I went back and listened closely after you said this... you are right, I think it rings unusually much from just the handle moving around in my hand. I think it's a combo of my skin being very rough, but also the wood being fitted tightly to the metal with very little room for adhesive in most of the joint. A harmonic bridge, if you will, allowing the blade to amplify the sounds made by my hand on the handle. Very interesting, thanks for pointing it out. I think it's kind of Vorpal.

Yes, there's something almost tuning fork-like about that joint between the handle and blade. Like a musical instrument.

Understated elegance Salem - well done Sir.
