I wonder if this inflammatory news story headline in this Sunday's paper has a lot of spin or there's some truth in it. Either way, New Zealand's knife laws are, no carry allowed unless for a valid reason (like going fishing).

The news story points to rising knife violence particularly with youth.
Is that on the rise elsewhere (yes, in UK and Australia we are told)?
Do draconian knife-carry laws reduce the culture of youth/or adult knife crime? Is there actually a problem with youth knife crime?

It doesn't matter which tool is being restricted or regulated-- be it gun, knife, or garden hoe-- those who will do ill will towards others will never heed laws based on matters of restriction. Any moron can figure that out. It's all about control and insecurity.

I agree.
Same deal for anti-smacking laws to protect kids. Useless and prejudicial against good, normal people.

There's no problem in the US as far as I can tell. Attacking people is already illegal, so what purpose would outlawing knives serve? Are people engaging in this behavior actually concerned with breaking laws? Is it something they lose sleep over?

IIRC -- the statistics show that the vast majority of knife-related assaults are done with common kitchen knives. How exactly would outlawing any type or even all types of pocket knives effect that statistic?

It's a behaviour problem, not a knife problem. Teaching kids about the responsible use of knives does little good if the underlying problems are still there. As if teens don't already know knives are dangerous.
