What do you make of this hatchet? It's an unusual shape and looks pretty old. I like the shape and profile for carving, and the handle is so slim under the head that I can completely close my fist around it. There are no markings that I can see. I like it. It's probably a 1.5lb head on a 15.5" handle.

I think the original owner modified the handle to his taste. If that's a factory shaped handle, it would be rare.

I don't think so, the fit is so perfect that I almost never see a replacement like that. Also, the head is different so it would not surprise me for the handle to be so.

It's german isnt it? My great grand father had a bunch of german Wood working tools I swear his hatchet head looked just like that.. with the kind of hollow grind look

The haft and head do seem to belong together. The upswept haft makes for a bit of an open hang that can be good for carving.

What about it being a M1910 belt axe, that someone drilled a lanyard hole into the handle? John

Certainly a similar handle. I think you're on to something.
