A new 301 for me

I broke down and sprung for this 301. I'm not sure what's up with it, maybe because I just haven't seen anything in "Charcoal Dymondwood" in real life. From the pictures I've seen, I thought it was dark material and this one appears more like wood. I didn't like the looks of the other stuff, but this attracted me. I don't see anything like this on Bucks web site and I'm not home to look at my 2009 catalog.

Is this something new?

This is what I thought they looked like.

I like the looks of the Charcoal Dymondwood slippy's. But, I can't get past the blue color on the inlay...:(...yuk. However, I'm sure Buck's marketing group is selling enough of them that they will not miss the one's I'm not going to buy.

I do like the color variation on your's Dave.

I'm with you about the "shield" and I really don't like the dark version, so I never even considered getting one. :thumbdn: When I saw the more "wood" looking handles, I decided to go for it and learn to live with the blue shield.

I'm just not really a big 300 fan, so I doubt it will turn into an obcession.

Plumb,
I like your wood look, I wish I had one like it. I like the light grey color also, I am not a fan of the dark wood. My humble opinion is that a jigged or smooth bone would sell like crazy.

Escutcheon plate or Blue inlay. I understand a effort to modernize and update. We have been assured that the Blue inlay is tough against scratches. And I bet the old stamped inlay is more costly. I bet marketing tests took place also, but "I" like the idea of a connection to the past of the stamped plate. The knife cutting the bolt. It was just
"BUCK", you knew you were looking at a Buck knife when you saw the knife cutting the bolt......one man's opinion.

My old 303 has the knife cutting the bolt and I also think of it as Buck. The new one I haven't seen in the flesh so I cannot comment on it. The 301 on the top has a darker inlay and the curved blade (sheepsfoot?) is different from the lower one.

Photos, especially color, can be misleading. I'm sure the wood is indeed a lighter color on the top knife as I have seen considerable color variation in actual samples as well, but I'm betting the color of the inlays are the same on the two knives.

As is the case usually, Dr. D (TinSue) is correct in his evaluation. As for me, " A Dulled mine keeps repeating the same mistake, expecting a change in results every time."

The yellow scale of Plumbs first thread post was taken under good ole' YELLOW household incandscent light. I could have changed color hues a little to get a closer match to Plumbs supplied photo but didn't. See first photo below:

Here is exact same knife, in exact same conditions with correct color lighting. I could have even changed the background color using digital computer photo processing on yellow photo, but I didn't. It's also harder to cheat on a background with multi-patterns and colors. Photo supplied Plumb may have been touched up. I think his spey blade tip missed the round over grind.

So much for the rare undyed oddball Dymondwood scale.......DO NOT USE THE OLD STYLE INCANDSCENT BULBS FOR KNIFE PHOTOS, USE SPIRAL TUBE FLOURSCENTS RATED AS 'DAYLIGHT 6500 KELVIN'. IT WILL BE ON FRONT OF PACKAGE....OR GO OUTSIDE...........

Well, it came today and the comments about the lighting were dead on. The knive's handles are much more "charcoal" than the sellers pictures show. It is a nice knife and I like the leather case that came with it, but had I known the color would be so different that the picture, I doubt I'd gone for it. The charcoal just doesn't really work for me.
