Backstory time.
A while back, @JohnDF started a review thread of the Moore Maker Boys Knife. Nice little knife, great F&F, heat treat done right, and I actually really like the lighter colored ash (I think? Someone correct me if I’m wrong) wood. I had to have one. Picked one up, and it’s been riding in my pocket ever since. Those of you that have them know how handy they are
The pattern itself (size, single clip blade, thickness, and no half stop) had become somewhat of a search for me. If it had one thing, it didn’t have two others. If it checked two boxes, it was lacking in something else. Well, as close as this little MM boys knife was to “perfect” for me, there was one box left unchecked. Carbon steel.
I have tried, and tried. Carbon steel just does not like me. I sweat a lot, very salty, live in an extremely humid (most time 100% humidity) environment, and to be completely honest I was not raised to take care of carbon steel the way it needs to be cared for. There was definitely a learning curve, to say the least. Through all that, this little knife has been so close to perfect, I’ve conditioned myself to care for carbon steel the way it should be taken care of. I’ve had some success, and even grown to like the knife, but that little unchecked box still pulled at me constantly.
In comes Eric @ea42 with his input on the thread. I had not known beforehand that he (and his partner at the time) were the makers of these knives. I’ve since educated myself, clearly
something hit me. Almost as if I was calling out to myself, to at least reach out. I couldn’t just pass it by.
I went out on a limb, and sent Eric a message. I just wanted to know if there was a chance, at any point in the future, for these knives to be made in stainless (I did not know about the Canal Street run at this point). Unfortunately, Eric informed me that there wouldn’t be any more runs of this particular knife for MM for a while, and expanded on his explanation of his business changes that he touched on in the original thread. “No worries, happens all the time,” I thought to myself. The search continues. Or does it.....
I also asked Eric if he would be willing to make me a stainless blade, and exact design replica, of the 1095 clip blade in the MM boys knife. Again, unfortunately, he wasn’t able to do something like that. I get it, and totally understood where he was coming from.
*side note- he was an absolute pleasure to chat with about these things, from the beginning to the very end. I’m very much a fan, and can’t wait till the next runs come out

He did, however, make me a special offer. An offer so genuine, and so rare (in my personal experience), that there was no way I would ever pass it up. He offered to make me a NEW KNIFE with a leftover Canal St blade in stainless!!

He even let me choose my own covers, and wether or not I wanted a shield on it. Truly an awesome guy!!

How could I pass on such a generous offer? I couldn’t! No way in a million years! So, now I’ve got a grail I didn’t even know was a grail. I couldn’t be happier with this knife. I already know it will be in my pocket when I’m buried, and the backstory makes it even more special to me.
So, here she is. I’ll call it a “semi” custom (again, please correct me if I’m wrong. I don’t know what else to call it).
Canal Street Cutlery 154CM
Stainless liners/bolsters
Gabon Ebony covers
No half stop
No shield
She came sharp as a razor, and centered up very nicely. No gaps between springs and liners, pull is nice and easy but still “firm” enough that you know you’re deploying your blade. No gaps between covers and bolsters, and pins sanded beautifully flush with the covers.
I just couldn’t have possibly asked for more, or for a better gentleman to do business with. I am just over here smitten, so I had to share.

And one with my Moore Maker just for good measure

Eric @ea42 thank you again. I cannot express how much I appreciate you, and how happy I am with this knife. You are a true gentleman, and you have my utmost respect, sir.
