I picked these up today the only thing I know about the first one is that it is a Benchmade, it has a 4 1/4" blade, and is about 9 1/4" overall.

The second one is Bali-Song U.S.A., it has a 4 1/4" blade and is 9" overall.

I would really like help with the forum's expertise in finding these things out.

- What models are they?
- What years were they produced?
- What are the blade types?
- What kind of steel is the blade made out of?
- What is the Rockwell hardness of the blades?
- What are the handles made out of?
- What is the average price of the balisongs and how rare are they?

Your help is greatly appreciated. I do not know how to research these knives in any other way.

Thanks You,

This is what I know someone correct me if I am wrong:

1) A benchmade 239, don't know how long it was produced but it was part of benchmade "economy" series that had nickel plated zemark handles. Your model has a weehawk blade with 400 H.C. (420) steel at 57-59 Rc. Not a bad knife but it was the economy series and retailed at about $50- you could definitely get more than that it just depends to whom and how much you wanted for it.

2) I think that it is a Bali-song USA custom. I am not as familiar with these models but I think those are ivory white micarta inserts it probably has a bowie clip blade of 440C steel. This one is a lot more rare and worth more - I am not quite sure on the exact price though.

Congrats on the new balis!

The pictures here are a little better.

The inserts on the Bali-Song U.S.A. appear to be some kind of wood inserts. The sheath pictured came with the Bali-Song U.S.A. balisong.

Mr. Gollnick can you please help shed some light on these balisongs? (especially the second balisong)

Thanks,

The handle has a definite wood grain to it, you really can't see it in the picture. But I do not have a clue as to what type of wood.

Like myself and balisongman said I think there whit micarta inserts. (I think that's is what they look like and more it is more common in benchmade customs)

Gollnick is having a very hectic weekend other wise he would give his advise.

Your Bali Custom has white "Ivory" Micarta inlays in the handles, not wood.

As others have said, White "Ivory" Mircarta yellows with age. In fact it is called "ivory" for that reason.

It also has a definite grain structure just like Ivory or wood but is much stronger, because it is a man made plastic laminate.

An excellent example of the older Bali-Song customs.

Congratulations on your aquisitions.

I think I have previously evaluated this exact same Bali-Song.

Even without seeing it, I can say that, as has been pointed out, that is white or ivory micarta. But, it is about 20 years old and it has done what light-colored micarta of that era does: it has discolored. This is not a problem. It is expected of micarta from this era. I think it's beautiful. It brings out the grain and gives the piece great character.

You can see just a very slight bit of staining in the Micarta near the ends. I often see this in the older BS and PC customs with light-colored Micarta. I think it's probably from some glue wicking up into the micarta through the cut end.

This knife was probably made in about 1982 or 83, so it's getting on 20 years old.

The knife is a great Bali-Song Cutlery with a very nice sort of Bowie. I can't tell completely from these pictures, but if this is the knife I'm thinking of, the blade has a few minor scratches but no edge damage and is in nearly mint condition. Again, I can't be certain from these pictures, but it sure looks like a Jody Samson blade. It's probably 440C Stainless.

I'd have to actually see the knife to make a through evaluation, but I'd say you have a very nice Bali-Song here, very collectible. Again, without seeing the knife, I'm gonna guess conservatively that the value is about $450.

Thanks you everyone for taking your time to help me. to make matters even better this is the first balisong in my collection, other than my bm42.

China cheapies, Jaguars, and Bears aren't worth mentioning.

I am very happy.
