Well, I finally decided what I want to do for my main career. It took some real soul searching, but I did it. Some of you may recall that I have been trying to get onto a professional fire service in a nearby city, as well as taking an EMT course (originally to get on said dept.). Well that is still up in the air (EMT class finished yesterday, don't know if I passed or not and won't for 6 weeks:( )

But what I DO know is that I have been accepted into a school for Massage Therapy. I was helped greatly by a massage therapist not too long ago and I would like to be able to help others. This job will also allow me to reach an elusive goal: to make enough money to live comfortably, make a living helping people, and make a living while being true to who I am.

I am very excited to start this new part of my life. I may be able to do Firefighting/EMT work on the side. I'm sure there's a book in there somewhere;) :D

Congrats, Rob:)
That sounds like a really nice profession to get involved in. Sounds like things are working out just fine for you:) There's an obvious joke in there, but i'm not gonna say it. Keep us posted. That sounds like a really rewarding career.

Good that you've made a choice, Rob. A lot of careers just 'happen'.

Don't try to massage any fires.

That's challenging but rewarding work.

Look into some of the tools available during your studies. They may make things easier on your hands.

Good luck.

Thanks guys:)

Yes, and that's what was "happening" to me. I kept winding up doing what I had done before, yet had sworn I wouldn't do again (being a professional killer is stressful:eek: ;) ) It is a nice feeling to have broken out of the cycle.

Congratulations and good luck! :) If I may make a suggestion, you should really look at therapeutic exercises and stretches for your hands. A LOT of massage therapists have trouble with chronic pain in their hands and fingers. Mastery of Hand Strength and The Grip Master's Manual by John Brookfield are both excellent resources. You don't need a lot of equipment to use his techniques either, most of his gear is homemade or improvised. I have both books already, maybe we could do another pass-around with them if anyone else is interested in checking them out. Anyway, best of luck with your new endevour.

Congratulations, I admire anyone who can take control of their lifes direction. Might I recomend rock climbing as a hobby if you dont already, it will make you much better at both fire fighting and massage. Strong fore arms, good hand control, and obviously climbing ability

Thanks RR. Good suggestions. I will bring this up with the faculty asap. I wondered about this myself. I hope that they emphasize using as much of your body weight and legs to do most of the work, but even so it coudn't hurt to get my hands in shape:thumbup:

Congratulations Rob. My wife is a massage therapist. Check out this website http://www.onsentherapy.com/ This would be excellent training after yoou graduate from school. My wife trained with him and his techniquesw are phenominal. Rich has worked with world class athletes and is a very down to earth and personable guy. Good luck and remember to be therapuetic.

I'm glad you've found a path that satisfies you. And massage therapist? Man, that's just plain cool.

Have fun.

Chris

Thanks again for all the kind words and good advice! I think a couple of you posted while I was typing my first response--thank you too!

Thanks very much Terry! I will look into that:)

I am still looking for a job now. Hope it will come to me soon

Thanks Red Flower. Can I make a suggestion that has worked incredibly well for me recently? Believe that a job will come to you, be open to it, and it will. Trust that what you need will be provided and it will. This sounded like jibberish to me at first then I started doing it and the things that have come my way since have been amazing!

Case in point Red Flower--today I was worrying about getting a part time job, and then I remembered to let go and trust that I would find one. Then while looking on the website of the very organzation I work for now, I found EXACTLy the part time job I wanted--working in the equestrian center here taking care of horses! I called the director over there and he said "you're hired!"

Good luck.

Good luck Uwinv. My massage therapist is worth all the money I don't have to pay her for her services.
Danielle has helped me beyond belief and was instrumental in getting me through to the time I could have the recent surgery!!!! :D

Congrats, man! That's awesome, finding a path while you're still a young'un.

Hell, I'm 32 and still don't know what to do when I grow up!:D

Nice.

You got a whole life in front of you. This is just the NEXT step.

Maybe you will end up being an equine massage therapist...creating a whole new employment niche.

Have fun, be safe.

Amen to taking care of your hands...

I should check those books out too.

need to take care of my eyes too, or what is left!

Congrats! Finding ones place is a great feeling!

That is great to hear Edutsi--it's cases like yours that make me want to do this. To improve someone's quality of life like that would be very satisfying.:)

Thanks! Well it took me until 34, but I'm not locking myself into one path. This is just one branch of the path. Who knows what 44 will bring?

It is already a field! Imagine the hand strenth you'd need for THAT:eek:

have the No.1 and No.2 'Captains of Crush' Grippers. I can close No.1 about 15 times with each hand. I can barely close No.2 with my dominant.

Thanks for the link Aardvark. I have been trying to find some of those that are actually tough enough to give me a workout--and it's not that my hands are that strong, it's just that most of the ones I've found are so wimpy you don't get any workout at all.

Good luck in both endeavors, MauiRob.

Can't go wrong having more than one profession, and nobody will mind getting a practice massage.

I once cross-trained a graphic artist to become a computer technician. I told him, "Worst thing that could happen, is that all your computer stuff will always work right."

He switched careers. Was a tech last I saw.
