My Dear Friends,
I have always been a fan of folding knives, mostly for their convenience. At the same time, I always stressed a bit over lock strength - let's face it, no folder is going to be as strong as a fixed blade under hard use - period.
Classically Spyderco has produced my favorite folding knives, partially due to superior design and innovation, and partially due to their business ethics. I like dealing with companies that hold themselves to a higher standard of behaviour.
I have never been a "fixed blade" kind of guy, but camping season last summer changed that - I found myself trying different fixed blades out from my collection, none of which by themselves proved suitable (the collection is very thin on fixed blades). When camping I normally bring a small hand axe, an ancient machete, and some kind of fixed blade. The axe and machete worked admirably - the fixed blade (which shall not be named) had abysmal performance - the balance was bad, the edge geometry was poor, and the ergonomics weren't.
I traded the blade off to someone who is a lot more patient than I.
So, as springtime has been fast approaching I have been looking about for a replacement fixed blade for camping and of course, RAT Cutlery came to mind, both for their designs and their business acumen.
Fair enough - my first RAT design was an O****** RAT-3 D2 obtained in trade (it was what was available quickly) - great design despite the ethics of the company producing it (I shan't elaborate further - you all know the story). Suffice it to say that I was sufficiently impressed with the design to be inspired to pursue other versions, and now have both an RC-6 and RC-4.
The RC-5 is on my short "must-have" list as well. Do I need it? No. But I *really* do want one.
Yes, it is overkill, but then again, I like overkill, most especially where my blades are concerned. I will probably eventually obtain an RC-3 as well - just for the sake of continuity of cutlery from a reputable manufacturer.
Bullet-proof blades, exceptionally ergonomic designs, and as rock-solid a warranty as there is in the business. What's not to love?
RAT Cutlery, my hat is off to you.
I will be carrying your knives proudly.
