My Dear Friends,

I have always been a fan of folding knives, mostly for their convenience. At the same time, I always stressed a bit over lock strength - let's face it, no folder is going to be as strong as a fixed blade under hard use - period.

Classically Spyderco has produced my favorite folding knives, partially due to superior design and innovation, and partially due to their business ethics. I like dealing with companies that hold themselves to a higher standard of behaviour.

I have never been a "fixed blade" kind of guy, but camping season last summer changed that - I found myself trying different fixed blades out from my collection, none of which by themselves proved suitable (the collection is very thin on fixed blades). When camping I normally bring a small hand axe, an ancient machete, and some kind of fixed blade. The axe and machete worked admirably - the fixed blade (which shall not be named) had abysmal performance - the balance was bad, the edge geometry was poor, and the ergonomics weren't. I traded the blade off to someone who is a lot more patient than I.

So, as springtime has been fast approaching I have been looking about for a replacement fixed blade for camping and of course, RAT Cutlery came to mind, both for their designs and their business acumen.

Fair enough - my first RAT design was an O****** RAT-3 D2 obtained in trade (it was what was available quickly) - great design despite the ethics of the company producing it (I shan't elaborate further - you all know the story). Suffice it to say that I was sufficiently impressed with the design to be inspired to pursue other versions, and now have both an RC-6 and RC-4.

The RC-5 is on my short "must-have" list as well. Do I need it? No. But I *really* do want one. :D Yes, it is overkill, but then again, I like overkill, most especially where my blades are concerned. I will probably eventually obtain an RC-3 as well - just for the sake of continuity of cutlery from a reputable manufacturer.

Bullet-proof blades, exceptionally ergonomic designs, and as rock-solid a warranty as there is in the business. What's not to love?

RAT Cutlery, my hat is off to you. I will be carrying your knives proudly.

Much thanks for the comments. I'm a big Spydie fan myself!

Hey, the RAT pack just picked up a truly classy member.

Glad to have you on board my friend.

I figured we ought to be really nice to anyone with that name!

i figure that RATs are the Spydies of the fixed blade world (as far as great companies, and quality designs and materials go)

My Dear Friend,

I figure that RATs are the Spydies of the fixed blade world (as far as great companies, and quality designs and materials go).

I believe that I am inclined to agree. :D

After a few days to play I think the RC-4 might be my personal favorite of the group, at least thus far. Good weight and balance with enough edge to do the job without getting unwieldy.

Of course, I haven't handled an RC-5 yet. :p

The RAT3 looks to be a great last-ditch deep-concealment blade, perfect as a carry-it-anywhere-and-stay-prepared sort of knife.

The RC-6 will be my primary knife this summer (unless an RC-5 presents in the interim) for routine camp chores. Certainly it is a large blade, but it is nevertheless well-balanced and looks to be able to handle anything I throw at it. My particular RC-6 has the short serrated section and initially I was concerned that I wouldn't like it for that reason, but I somehow think it has enough plain edge available that the serrations will be an added benefit rather than an annoyance (I am not normally a fan of combo-edge blades - generally not enough of either edge type to really be useful).

As I am in the process of building a deck this weekend I won't have a lot of time to play with sharp things, but early next week I plan on getting a strop constructed (I have the parts but lack the time). My dear friend and knifebrother BigKahunaSix assures me that 1095 steel will get positively screaming sharp with a strop.

I'll let you know how it works out. :D

My very best to you all,

Hannibal Lecter
