I went to my local knife store this morning. I usually buy on the net but I was not working today and found myself in the neighborhood and wanted to look around and get some hands on feel.

They had new Sog Flash. Both the large and the small sizes. I had pretty much decided I would buy an inexpensive knife and give these guys some business. Partially out guilt and mostly I would like too see these guys stay in business. I pretty much narrowed down my focus to buy either the Kershaw Scallion or Sog Flash.

The Scallion is more substantially built and heavier. It has zytel scales and steel liners. The steel on Scallion is 420HC, I think. The Flash has an all zytel handle that is somewhat shorter say 1/4" than the Scallion. The blade of the Flash is aus-8, somewhat longer but narrower than the Scallion. Both models have safeties though since the Flash is a thumbstud opener only, I can't see that a safety is necessary. The Scallion can also be opened by pushing in back side of the blade so I can see where it could open in your pocket thus making the safety useful.

I ended up getting the Flash. The blade action is stronger. The steel is a step up. The clip design is the perhaps the slickest thing about the knife. It gives a such a deep carry, that no one can tell you are carrying a knife. It is quite small in relationship to knive so it is very unobtrusive while using the knife. Excellent touch. I like the light weight of knife . You do not notice the knife at all. It can be carried in your shirt pocket like a pen. It is very light weight. The larger version Flash is much larger. It was only about $10 more but it was much larger. I find 3" blades to be best. That gives good control and can be less obtrusive in your pocket. I would have liked something in between the large and small.

This one is small. Still,it is large enough to be useful. The only negative, the blade lock up has a little vertical play. The others that I tried in the store also had play. The dealer said they all were like this. This might have to do with the bolt action lock.

Hi Roger,

Thanks for your comments. It's always great to hear from customers like yourself. I've been maveling over the Flash series knives through all the stages of prototypes since I handed the first ones sometime before the first of the year. The perfectded assisted action is simply quite sweet! :D

You posted an identical thread to this one (what appearded to be a "double tap"), so to streamline things, I deleted the duplicate. Just wanted to let you know if you wondered where it went.
