No, not JFK's vision for 1960's America, but a 2015 Nissan Frontier.

My 02 Ranger had reached critical rot in the body and frame and although the engine was running strong, with 207,863 miles on it the AC and fan had died and I couldn't see putting any more money into it. Without a defroster, these chilly mornings were becoming a little less pleasant. What a great vehicle. I bought it new and it never left me stranded. Front bearings and replacing the slave cylinder twice was the only "major" work it ever needed. If they still made a Ranger I would have bought one in a heartbeat.

Got what I though was a fair deal on a new 4X4 Crew Cab Frontier with V6 and automatic. A new vehicle, it has all the bells and whistles that are unnecessary but I guess I will like.

Used 4 wheel drive trucks hold their value pretty well and I couldn't find a good deal on anything used around here. Also, I generally maintain my vehicles well and drive them for at least a decade. Add in 1.9% for 60 months and it ended up getting the deal done.

I liked the Tacoma, but a similarly equipped one was several thousand more, and even the stripped Tacoma I looked at was a couple thousand more than the Frontier. Don't even get me started on the Colorado\Canyon which I read are nicer, but are more expensive and I think a little too big.

The Frontier is a great height for sliding in and out of (I'm 5'10" with a steel hip and arthritis, so easy entry is important). Also, as a home owner and with 2 apartment houses, I need a truck for push mowers, an occasional load of stone, dump runs, etc., but I don't need a great big truck for that stuff either.

Congrats.

Sounds like trade-in value isn't an issue but, that would be my reason for avoiding the Colorado/Canyon. Being "domestic" they still don't seem to fetch as much trade-in or re-sale.

US sales of the 2016 Ford Ranger remain a rumor. I won't believe it until I see it. I don't think GM/Toyota/Nissan are stealing too many sales from Ford with their small trucks.

Definitely. The Tacoma in particular holds its value to a ridiculous level. Heck, I saw one that had 100K on it and they wanted 19K for it. That clearly makes the overall cost of the truck better at the back end but I just didn't want to shell out over 30K for a small truck.

I'm not holding my breath on a new Ranger either. The new Colorado is much bigger than the old one. Everybody wants a big truck. Even the "mid size" are pretty big now. I saw a picture of an old Tacoma, like a 1994, next to a 2015 Tacoma and the new Taco was enormous in comparison.

Those frontiers are hearty little trucks. That vq series motor is stout, makes more power than the Tacoma by quite a margin for less money.

Congrats

I'm more of a european van guy myself but it's always nice to get a new vehicle.

The frontier is a pretty cool truck, an old coworker had one for offroading. He said it almost kept up with the tacoma on the rocks.
but I feel toyota doesn't offer as much features, because of their reputation. 'Lesser' trucks usually have to offer more to compete, which makes them a good value.
I wouldn't buy colorado, didn't feel it was for me.

The Toyota is going to hold its value the best. If the Colorado is anything like the first generation, avoid like the plague. I've always liked the Frontier, however, have never even sat in one. Any reason to not get a full size? The mileage difference really isn't all that significant, IMO. An F150 will do 20mpg if it has enough gears in the trans. :) Just a thought.

Yes. I specifically did not want the full size. I looked at them all and drove two 150s. One an STX and one an FX4. They both drove great, better than the Frontier actually. But I do not need or want the oversized rigs they call "full size" these days. I don't want to have to climb up into my vehicle half a dozen times a day or lift things into the bed of a truck higher than waist level. Also, I have giant breed dogs, currently a Neapolitan Mastiff and she would have trouble jumping up into a full size. Maybe that's a silly reason, but it was a factor as well.

I found the 150 a little difficult to navigate in an old cramped downtown over in NY where I was driving it although it drove great on the highway. I just don't need the capability of a full size. Also, although everybody talks about great deals on full size trucks, I never actually found one anywhere close to the 27.5K I paid for the Frontier.

The gas mileage of the Frontier almost made me pass on it because over the long term my total vehicle cost will probably be higher but everything is a trade off.

Fair enough! Cars are my favorite thing, so I tend to choose cool/unique over practical, but I certainly understand. :D
Congrats, too by the way. Any pictures?

I used to think I was a "car guy" but when push comes to shove the almighty dollar seems to take over :grumpy:.

I would say in my defense, that the Frontier is much more unique, if not cooler than a full size where at least here in the Northeast, every other vehicle seems to be a full size pickup (or a Subaru).

Congrats on the new ride, and just in time for Winter, may it give you thousands of trouble free miles.

Congrats on the new fronty man. I agree with you on the Toyota price exaggeration. I picked up a 2015 Pro4X Xterra back in February. I got it for overlanding and seeing the outdoors. Plus I have averaged over 3,000 hour a year for the last 4 years so I felt I deserved something for my hard work. I have been planning this for over a year before I got it. At first I looked at Jeeps, but after driving a few and having one leak on a test drive (I know things happen, but I hear horror story's from some previous jeep owners), I looked elsewhere. That lead me to a 4funner. But dam, 45K, longer wheelbase, worse approach and departure angles, and weight penalty. Then one day I was leaving toysRus with my daughter and in the parking lot was a nicely fixed up Xterra. Well, I knew what I wanted, and hence started the research. Test drove one. Talked to a few coworkers that owned one or more, nothing really bad was said about them. Then I seen the prices, reviews, available in a manual, etc. I devoted myself over a year ago to get it since I knew what I wanted.

I first ordered some armor (bumpers/ sliders/ skids) from Shrockworks, they have up to a 9 month lead time. So I figured I would have a leg in once I found what I wanted. Then Gobi had an awesome sale on the rack/ ladder/ accessory for just the price of the rack (saving me @$400 (more than 20%) so I jumped, it took about 2 months for that to come in. And still did not have an Xterra. Then Nisstec had a sale on top of their normal discount so I picked up my suspension. Presidents day, I pull into work and my trusty Honda Civic fills with steam.... After 12 years of great service, and having just done timing belt, radiator, etc, I was pissed, so I had it towed home and hit a few car lots. I really wanted a manual, and no used were any where near my place, even carmax could find one within 1,000 mile radius in a 2011-2013. So as dumb luck would have it, a dealer had a 2015, pro4X, manual, in white with no add ons, not even running boards which were nice as I already had the armor. Went in test drove it, and a few hours later I it was mine for under 29K all said and done. I have had some great offroad trips with it so far, this next spring I am going to do the Mojave trail with a few from a southern cali nissan group, also going to try and hit all 3 national Nissan events (ECXC/ Rausch creek, GONE/ moab, WENT/ windrock) next year. I have spent about 9K of add ons into the X and still need wheels and tires, but she is almost complete, is a blast to drive, and turns heads. I have recovered a few vehicles off road and they all say about the same thing... what the hell is this?

Hope the Fronty treats you as good as your Ranger did. And congrats again.
