I got a small gold plated, or at least gold colored two blade gents knife at a garage sale today. It has the fully "engraved" stamped handles and it is tang stamped Anvil over stainless, over USA, and the tiny little bale is stamped Made in USA.

Do any of you guys know about or have heard anything on this brand? It looks similar to a couple of little Schrade origin knives I picked up last year except they were silver.

Hi Paul,

All I can tell you from the description is that Anvil is a Colonial Brand. The knife sounds like the type a company/corporation might give as a gift or award. Any pictures?

Bill

Thanks, El Lob. My main concern was the "root" company. It's the type knife you'd see in the gift dept. of a department store or a jewelry store etc. The kind you buy for someone who has everything, or you just forgot until the last minute. This one was a Valentine's day gift for "R A" on 2/14/86., and is so engraved.

The guy selling it said "this knife goes back to 1886, it's really old and has never been used"....and then I said "BULL SH*T, buddy, it's stainless and Anvil wasn't in business in 1886, and the '86 is 1986, so NOW what do you want for it?" Ha Ha, I won that one. I only had to pay $500....................No not really. It is like new and I paid $12.00 which is still probably too much.

Hi Paul,
Not much I can add, except that Goins' says the trade mark was used from 1972 to present, so the 1986 fits his info.

Anvil was a brand name used by Colonial They made 4 folders similar to the 8OT 34OT 108OT and 33OT and a few gentlemans patterns.
Here is a gold gentlemans I have. I think I posted the 4 folders before.

Not in great shape but interesting example.

Not to dig up an old thread but I was searching for some info on what I believe is the same knife sheathmaker has.

I picked it up a couple years ago and just dug it out of a drawer. Decided I'd do a search here to get some more info on it.
The one I have is in what appears to be the original box. Its a jewelery type box with the spring hinge. Gray flocked with the satin-ish lining. The inside of the top reads "Colibri - 10 Karat Electroplate". The knife is held in place with two elastic bands and sits on a gray pin-striped backing. Probably wool/suit material.

My camera is dead and the battery is charging so I can't put up a pic right now.

Thanks for the info regarding Colonial.

Chris

Schrade did make a solid gold gentlemans knife back in the 1940s. From memory i think it sold for well over $100 which was an aweful lot of money for a knife back then. I have a magazine add for it somewhere.

I don't think Schrade made the Colibri. During the 1980s & early 1990s, I managed a small chain of Smoke Shops. We sold Colibri products; lighters, pocket watches & gentleman's pocket jewelry. As far as I know all of them were made in Japan.
