Hello all, I wish a Happy Easter and Passover to all those on here. I am starting a new project that some on here may be interested in so I thought I would share. I am starting to make a couple of PW Norwegian Langsaxes this week and am documenting the progress. Here is a link to the blog where you can check out some of my progress. More photos to come :) http://www.wildernessironworks.org/apps/blog

Well everyone here is an update...the blade is done now onto the handle and scabbard!

Nice looking pattern welding, it will be interesting to see what you do with the blades. What are you using as your source material for historical reference?

Well here it is it was a ton of work but I'm calling it done. I did this single edged viking sword all with hand hammers and it measures just shy of 32 inches over all length. The guard and pommel are antiqued brass and stainless steel pressure fitted with copper pins. The sheath is carved walnut with antiqued copper fittings and brass rings with gold leaf. The handle is Indian rose wood and the blade is made of 1080 and 15N20 with a W2 edge. It took me 7 hours of constant forging to hammer this brute out but it was well worth it. I was inspried by Scott Roush's "Heirloom" and the idea of making something that looked like you had found it in some store room of a museum forgotten and well used. It was fun to make and I'm already planning my next one. Thanks for looking!

It's a nice first effort, kudos to you for taking on something new. If this is something you are considering pursuing on a regular basis I might suggest a copy of Ian Pierces Swords in the Viking Age as a good initial reference. I'd also be interested to see what you did with the seax blade that was of more normal length.

Thanks Triton, this certainly was a big learning experience and I do intend on making many more of these. Thank's for the suggestion on the reference book I've been trying to find goo references. I had a big database on my laptop from my trip to Leeds and the Higgins but my laptop crashed before I could back them up :( so 5,000 photos gone... but I will definitely be ordering Pierces book shortly.
