A New Look For Blades - Help Me Identify it

There is a newer look in some fixed blade knives that I love. Farid has used it in hi REX 121. It is where 1/2 to 2/3 of the blade is flat ground and the rest of the blade is very rough, course and pitted looking, like unfinished metal and I think it is dark in color. If anyone can tell me about that and where I can find knives designed this way, I will appreciate it. For me, they are just gorgeous. Please help, I just have to have this style. Thanks everyone.

The look on that particular knife I'm not familiar with, but generally the dark/rough flats (sometimes blackish or reddish) is an unfinished heat treat. Sometimes it's accompanied by a hammer finish. I'm not sure how Farid gets that pitted metal look... Perhaps it's the unfinished edges of the steel stock? Deep corrosive etch before grinding? I've never seen anything quite like it, it's really cool.

Carter knives have a bit of that and it is called hammer finish, but it is not the beautifully pitted finish that Farid and some others get. I wonder if it is an acid treatment. I am addicted to that look now.

Sometimes called "brute de forge" I think. The roughness is the forging/hammer marks, colour is from the HT, especially an oil quench.

Great information mtangent. There is something about the look and I can't do without. Maybe I can find someone else that does this kind of work. I don't think there is any way to get a Farid Mule anymore. Thanks so much.

mtangent, brute de forge it is. Not many doing it, but if it is deep and rough and darkened, I just love that look. I will try to find knife makers that use that, thanks to your great input. Thanks so much.
