a friend of mine got into the knife habit, mainly because of me. his first spydey is a zdp dragonfly and he's very impressed with the knife, especially after i touched it up for him (NIB knives from ebay are almost uniformly dull.) now he wants to try other spydercos, saying he's interested in the various super steels (uh-oh...) well, he's fixing his sights on the paramilitary s110v and i'm telling him that steel is best reserved for more "mature" knife buyers. i'm advising him to first try out an s30v or even an M4. for one, he doesn't know how to sharpen. and while i'm willing to help or teach him, getting the suitable sharpening media might be a problem here in the philippines. with zdp 189, at least, i can sharpen with carborundum and varying grits of sand paper. but what about s110v? i told him he might have to invest in diamond stones and he's open to the idea (he's at that stage, help him!!!)

Get a Lanksy Deluxe 5 Stone (diamonds) and get the Super Sapphire hones and he's all set for sharpening. Probably the least expensive yet decent sharpening system with diamonds

thanks. but he might have to get it from the mail. the shops here sell only the regular lansky's. so, ceramic stones won't work with s110v? how about the sharpmaker?

Ceramic stones would be pretty hard to reprofile the hard S110V blade unless the angle is set and for regular touch ups(diamonds being harder than ceramics they can cut through any steel no matter what). And i also feel that the diamond set is more worth it than the ceramic one as sooner or later you might want to get extra diamonds for the set to replace the ceramics at a higher cost than when they came in a set

As for the sharpmaker i just think of it to be more of a "touch-up" system. Any major sharpening or reprofiling probably wouldn't work too well on it

But if you had to choose one, between the Lanksy ceramic or the sharpmaker, its the sharpmaker for sure. The only-ceramic lansky just isn't very good. The sharpmaker should work pretty well for spydies due to their angles being set.

However, any possibility of being able to preorder a Lanksy diamond 5 stone set via one of the stores? I live in Singapore and knives and sharpening stuffs are also quite limited and thus i regularly preorder the things i want from my go-to dealer

With the addition of the CBN/diamond rods... The sharpmaker has no problem reprofiling or sharpening s110v or any other steel. IMO...

Once in a while. I'll grab my 400 diamond plate and lean it on the rods, for a heavier reprofile.

The SM is a Great sharpening system. Once a knife is sharp it will keep it that way!

Hank,

I live south of you ;). I can imagine how hard & expensive it is to get DMT. I ended up ordering the credit cards from Amazon, all in it costed me about 50$ (with shipping).
Told myself if I am patient, any size of diamond should work. No budget cannot ask for much :o

Alternatively, one can use cheaper ACE / China coarse/fine stone for reprofiling then continue with the DMT C with preliminary work done by the cheaper stone, because at lower grits, the stone will (hopefully) scoop out the carbides.

Good luck!

Lol I have a friend just like this right now. We were talking about him getting a Tenacious... ended up with a Mantra. I thought that was cool until he bought a Southfork and had it drop shipped to Mr Wilson him self to verify the blade hardness and sign the box.

Little tyke's growing up so fast :p

Honestly he can get by with the stock ceramics on the sharpmaker for quite awhile before needing the diamonds if he keeps up with the edge.

sometimes you wonder whether or not talking about your hobby potentially damages other people. :D
Sorta funny really, your pal might as well invest in the diamonds and get it over with. A cucumber can become a pickle but a pickle can't ever become a cucumber again.:D
