I've been waiting patiently (OK...maybe not so patiently) for a new Obie. I contacted Mike a few months back and he mentioned that he was just finishing up a batch of knives for True North and suggested I contact Neil who was nice enough to put up with my countless emails and calls over the course of a month or two. I placed my order yesterday and had my package from Neil about 20 hrs later. How's that for service?

I opted for a Mini Model 2 with carbon fiber scales. The mini measures 3 7/8" closed, OAL comes in at 6 5/8" with a 2 3/4" blade of S30V. Matte finished Carbon Fiber is mated to ti liners & bolsters. Neil just got this one in from Mike, so it's literally right off the bench. I found it smooth, but a little tight out of the box so I added a drop of Militec on each side of the pivot and it removed the slight resistance immediately. I was always amazed at the smoothness of my Obie framelock, and this liner lock is no different.

Lock up is achieved with a solid and audible clank. No play in any direction, just as anticipated. The S30V blade is scary sharp and just like my other model 2, this mini is equipped with the characteristic & portly Obenauf drop point blade. To my surprise, when Neil described the blade he indicated it had a slight recurve. It's absolutely gorgeous and places even more emphasis on the blade's already oversized belly (a belly much like my own ). The bolsters & blade are finished in the same satin appearance. A black micarta spacer fills the otherwise open back and the package rounds out with dual thumbstuds and a clip set for tip-down carry (which I promptly removed).

You can't review or describe Mike Obenauf's knives without using the word "value" at least once. IMHO, Mike's knives are simply one of the best values on the market today. Fit, finish and action are are as good or better than knives I've handled at considerably higher price points. Attention to detail is clear the first time you open an Obenauf folder. It's smoothness defies gravity. It's items like the burly bellied blade, a distinct finish and quality workmanship that set his knives apart from so many others available today. Toss in the great value and it's a package that's hard to beat...any any price.

And lastly, my two Obenauf Model 2's, the 'small' framelock and my new 'mini' liner lock.
Stay tuned for pics of my Damascus model 2 in the next couple of weeks.

Those are beauties Patrick, and know where you are coming from. I got a Model #3 linerlock with 3" blade from Geode off the forums here a month or so ago at a great price, and liked it so well that I called Mike, and told him how impressed I was with the knife in quality, and workmanship, and placed an order with him for a large model #2 linerlock in clip point blade. It will be identical in that it will be carbon fiber scales, ti bolsters, jeweled liners, S30V blade in satin finish. Looking forward to getting it for my birthday at the end of the year.
Great guy to talk to, and with him, and Kit Carson being in the same shop got to talk with Kit as well.
Enjoy those beauties as his knives are some of the best out there.

patrick, you scored big time...AGAIN! I hate you :)

and I noticed that your linerlock even has a swedge - never seen that on an obie before. another score!!!

great pics - how did you take them with the all black background?

I know how you feel now....I still feel that way even tho I got my linerlock months ago.

I know it, the swedge *and* a slight recurve?!? This blade profile rocks! All that AND it's typically Obenauf sharp.

RE: the background, I shot these on a black piece of suede leather, but have used black foam core board or black rubber shelf liners. Either way, I adjust the levels using photoshop and if desired, I can blend the background so it looks kinda like the knife is floating. Sometimes, the suede looks nice on its own, other times not. Here's a quick example showing two photos with both techniques. The photo or more often, my mood, will determine the end result. It seems lately, I've been going with the all dark backgrounds, however, seeing the leather makes me want to go back and alter some of the other ones.

That's a beauty Patrick! I have a small Model 2 that I picked up at last Nov's NYCKS. My blade is like the one on your Ti-handled Model 2. Otherwise, it's the same knife. Mike O. is doing some incredible work.

Good luck with your new Model 2.

Great looking knives! I'm a big fan of Mike O's work, Kit trained him very well. I'd love to purchase one of his knives someday, but right now the wife would kill me if I spent that much. :) Even though his knives are probably the best value in custom knives at the moment.

Awesome. I am glad that batch is done. My name crawls slowly up the list....

Wade,
Boy am I in the same boat. The mini was discussed and agreed upon some time ago with my lovely wife, I assumed after this mini and the Lochsa from a few weeks ago, my custom buying was done for the year. However, the Damascus Model 2 that I found at USN's Trader's Cove was a bit of an impulse purchase. She doesn't know about that one, but the beauty and rarity of Damascus on a Model 2 framelock was just too much to pass up.

CAN'T...STOP...BUYING...OBENAUF...MODEL 2'S...PLEASE...SEND...HELP... :D
