Ahhhh, yes. The C54 Calypso. Apx 10+ years ago, only 600 in Plain Edge configuration were produced. Not the easiest spyderco to come by. And due to many cases of blade warp within them, they never received much praise. Personally speaking though, it was always one of my favorite models, along with its little bro the FRN Jr. The shiny black micarta, smooth lines, slender profile, out of this world ergos and super thin slicing matter separator equated to true love for dd :D

Well spyderco has out done themselves!!!!! If you enjoyed the original, be prepared to get all warm and fuzzy inside with this one!!! I LOVE IT LOVE IT LOVE IT!!!

Havnt been real in-tune with the spyderco community these days (still own and use spydercos more then ever though) but when I was I do believe Sal mentioned on multiple occasions that he didnt have intent or desire to re-produce the C54. Cant recall why but I do remeber always being saddened by the notion. That was until a few weeks ago when I read somewhere that spyderco was indeed making a C54 Sprint!!!! Hadnt been so happy in a while about a knife and sure as heck as soon as I found a deal on one, I JUMPED!!!!!

Havnt done any cutting with it yet (already know it will rock in that dept) but I did compare it with my original and here is my take

-The original, with its smooth micarta and thin profile made for a great waistband knife considering how large it was. However, if my waste band was beefier then avg, the clip would extract a bit more then I prefer since the screws I think are tapped directly into the micarta and had no other carry options. If the clip for some reason got caught on something I was always worried that my discontinued classic would get jacked up. With the new one, I dont have that worry since the liner retains the screws, That and it has 4 way carry option, always nice having options. The G10 of course is not as cozy as the micarta but I LOVE the grip it provides and the fact that it doesnt retain the cold like the micarta (its a VERY cold day :D)

The new one, with its skelotinized liners has a much more solid feel while not taking away from what made the original so awesome (large cutter in a light slender package). Love the tip up option! Prefer tip up when I use extensive but if I want to be very discreet can swap the clip to tip down for a SUPER low ride in the clip.

Im not too picky about my blade being centered but the blade warp on the orignal was something that always lacked gravity. The new one, oh yeah, nice and straight! Razor sharp hair shaving thin edge out of the box, slightly gritty action which was the case with 4 caly 3s I got 2 years ago, but nothing major at all or something that cant be easily countered.

It will likely become my favorite folder in the weeks to come however If I could change anything about it, maybe just a steel upgrade. Im not a huge steel junky but Ive got so many VG10 slicers already so it would of been a cherry on top is all :D (peel ply cf /zdp hint hint wink wink)

Overall, I believe the New Sprint C54 will make for a much more user friendly version than the original and be regarded as one of Spydercos best slicers ever!!! Those who were not around at the time of the original will also get a chance to own/use/carry a classic model (improved) without having to fork out $250-300 for the original, if you can even find one. C54 Sprint = WINNING! Thanks Sal!!!

Enuff yap here is the eye candy

I really really like the Calypso and Caly 3.5, but the pinned construction is what's keeping me from pulling the trigger on them. Is there anything to be concerned about over time, regarding blade play or integrity of the construction?

Ive used/flicked my 2 caly 3's extensively over the last 4 years and the idea of them deteriorating has never crossed my mind. I however am not hard on my knives, esp thin slicers like the caly/psos. For what they are designed for, id bet my life on them.

Got mine in the mail today,I really like it,been wanting one for a long time it's better than I expected
large flat pivot is nice ,my favorite clip that Spy. makes, awesome g10 finish and color, beautiful false grind on top of blade.

thank you ,Spyderco I went and ordered a back-up :D

I just hope there are still a couple around when I get my car's new timing belt paid off.

I had 2 land in my mailbox yesterday! I really like how thin the knife is and how it sits in the pocket. I like the blade shape/size as well. A little bigger than an Endura and little pointier.

Oh and I've never had a problem with any of my pinned Spydies.

I never saw any info on how many of these were made. Anyone know?

You just had to post it next to the knife I want (but dont need) more than any other, dang you:D
