A new "Pony" for my Bushcrafter

Picked up this bushcrafter from Andy a few weeks back and finally got some time to make a sheath for it - Or as my girlfriend calls them "Knife ponies" - "When are you going to make that knife a nice pony?" she asks all too often.

I started buying knives with no sheaths to push myself into making them. This is my 2nd one, no tools other than a wood awl, knife, needle, and thread.

Ambidextrous cross draw. I am surprised as how securely it sits, and can flip it around to where ever is comfortable or how you want to wear it (left / right / front / back). Semi - wet formed to give it that kydex snap.

Andy makes one hell of a knife I must say, and it was a pleasure to make this sheath for it. No actions shots yet but should get some up after next weeks bush romp in the rockies :)

Thanks!
Klammer

I love the way you made the horizontal carry at an angle. I like to use the same carry, but I put the knife just ahead of my left pocket with the handle facing to the right.

Neato!! I was wondering if you planned to post pics of your sheath. Really good work there. I too like how the horizontal is an angled horizontal. Good design.

I like that carry option too.

Can I make only one suggestion. Use a diamond awl and a stitching groover. They are dirt cheap and they will make your stitching last longer. The thread sits in a groove and the awl holds the thread tighter.

I hope that doesn't sound pompus. If your 'pony' holds your knife well and YOU are happy - screw it - that is all that matters! If this is your SECOND sheath - you are doing great. The carry is unique - and custom to fit your needs - just like it should be!

Fully appreciate the suggestions! Not sure of the function of the diamond awl, but I assume it makes a more uniform hole for the thread than the wood awl I am using? Making the holes is one of the more frustrating parts. I was thinking of using a small drillpress with small bits.

A stitching groover is next on my list of items to buy. I have 3 more custom knives waiting for sheaths and have been very torn on the style of sheaths to make for them (2 of them have blades well over 8 inches).

My first sheath was for my Bravo 1, was not a fan of the kydex it came with at all - more than a few mistakes made but learned quite a bit! I jsut noticed the "Sheaths & Such" section - I should start posting over there :)

Thank you again for the feedback TF :)

Klammer - Buy the book 'How to make leather Cases" by Al Stohlman. It is only about 50 pages - and you will only need to read about 15. But it is THE BEST for making basic sheaths.

The diamond awl will not leave that round hole in your leather after you set the stitch.

The book is cheap by the way. - maybe 10 bucks.

Feel free to ask questions - I would be MORE than happy to help.

There is a video out there that is fantastic too. Its by Chuck Burrows. Really informative.

Whyat wood is this handle made of?

I apologize bro. I missed this question the first time. Thats curly Maple over East Indian Rosewood IIRC.
