It happened without me noticing. Somewhere along the way I grew up. I don't know where, I don't know when, but my tastes in knives seems to have matured and now seems to lean towards the practical. I used to adore the big blades -- bowies, daggers, khukuris, and assorted swords. I still like them (and always will as I appreciate fine bladeware), but now I find that I am drawn mostly towards smaller knives that are more useful for simple, everyday tasks. Knives like slipjoints or, in this specific case, puukkos.

This particular puukko was made by Pekka Tuominen. It is 8 1/8" long, with a 3 13/16" silversteel (Böhler k510) blade. The handle is stacked birch bark with brass mountings. The sheath (tuppi) is the traditional leather with a wooden insert.

I am going to use this puukko as my new day hike knife.

Thanks for looking.

Congrats on a beautiful knife. I'm sure it will make a great user.
As far as I'm concerned, Pekka Tuominen is an artist.

same here about my choices on knife size. I m starting to think that as I grow old I become a bit of a sissy :P
But then again someone could argue that as we become more experienced we replace an abundance of steel with some experience.
Either way, this looks like a very nice puuko.

That's a great looking knife. I have gone through an evolution over the years as well. I grew up in the Rambo era and have owned so many big knives, I can't remember them all :D I still love big blades, but find that I use and carry knives that are much smaller. I also travel in mostly desert like areas and as much as I appreciate choppers, I really can't find too much to use them on.

Did you custom order this?

Yes. I spec'd out the blade finish, handle material, mountings, and color of the sheath. I'm pretty sure that Pekka makes most of his knives to order, though he does offer his wares at a few shows each year.

This is what he wrote about the matter in the brochure provided with the knife.

Pekka's business idea is to make knives as customer wishes. Mostly he makes puukko-knives, hunting-knives, leuku-knives, daggers, and folding knives. Pekka tries to keep his style simple, clear, and usefull.
