Played hookey from work yesterday to hang out with my wife and read. Had a mystery delivery attempt from UPS the other day, they didn't leave the package because signature was required. Yesterday I got lucky and somehow heard the doorbell and went flying downstairs to see who was there...UPS. I couldn't figure out who in heck would send a signature required UPS package, and I was determined I'd never do business with whoever that was again - it's a serious PITA to go to their office to pick stuff up.
Anyway...I changed my mind when I got the package. It was from Randall Made Knives! My mini Model 14 ordered just over a year ago. My first Randall from the Randall shop, what a feeling. I'm actually getting a little Randall knife collection going, have four of them now and one still on order.
But this little 14 is pure sweetness. I'll try to get a picture of it this weekend, it's just too cool for words. It even has a tiny stone in the pocket of the sheath, and miniature OD cord and everything. Just way too cool.
It's been a lucky knife collection week for me. I traded a knife I'd made back in 1990 for a Randall 10-3, so a $125 (at best) knife for a $300 one. And I traded an Al Mar folder that I got for about $135 value in another trade for a small Sebenza that had never been carried; another $300 knife. I'm not usually a good trader, just had God smiling on me lately. I am a fortunate man.
Many people contend that Randall knives are overvalued, and I'm on the fence on that one. They are rather crudely made by today's handmade standards but the mystique of a Randall means it'll always hold its value, better than about any other handmade knife - a generalization only. I'd wanted a Model 1 since I was in high school and finally got my first one in 2000. It has stag and NS, rather traditional. A while back I ordered a Model 2 set up the same way and when at Blade a couple of years ago searched out a matching piece of stag to have Randall use on my Model 2 when they get around to making it. I'll have a matching set one of these days. 4 1/2 year wait for orders is a long waiting list though. I think my Model 2 will be done in Aug 2006; almost there!
