I haven't done many recurves but I did two this week. One was a little tactical recurve and the other one was this one. I was going for an aggressive look with the knife. The blade is forged from W-2 and is 11" long and 2" wide atthe widest spot. The overall length is 16". The guard and fitting is made from my damascus and the handle is a Caramel colored mammoth ivory. I hope you enjoy.

although I must say......I like the knife.

I dont think recurves fit into the bowie theme..........at all.

Stuck back in time.........TM

Nice job.

I think that looks very nice, I am not sure how to feel about the recurve/bowie theme but it sure does look good especially the layout of the pins in the handle. Your hamon is very nice.

Nice lookin bowie Craig and different too.

Must be something in the air, I just forged two big recurved fighters this week.

When I first checked out this knife, I didn't think I cared for the recurve. The second time I looked at it, I liked it more. I can see that it is already growing on me. I really like the eight small pins, but would prefer it without the mosaic pin.

That's a cool, bold design. I like it. And that caramel mammoth looks sweet enough to eat!

Awesome Bowie, Smokin' Recurve!!
Superb handle/guard configuration.
Edited to add: Just picked up one of your S-Guard Stag handled Bowies and your work is exceptional !

Doug :)

I can't stop checking out that blade -- awesome work.

I like it. Many here seem to be focusing on the aesthetic merits of the recurve, but I've been using them on my hard use knives for functional reasons. No, not to get more cutting power like people are so fond of discussing, but to simply increase the service life of the knife. The end third of my blades are what see the most use and sharpening, so this just means there's more metal there to accomodate it.

I made my current bowie almost 2 years ago with a nice broadened belly/recurve. It was 2 1/4" wide at the belly. Now, it's 2 1/8" wide from sharpening out damage. (concrete and steel tend to do that ;) ) In another couple years, the recurve will be gone completely. So don't let folks bug you about making a design that will last longer term.

Like Anthony said, you're really progressing by leaps and bounds!!

The first OKCA show I went to 8 or so years ago saw me immediately snag two recurve bowies - one from Todd Begg and another from and English maker by the name of Mick Penfold...

And your piece would fit right in with that theme... :D

However, and this is only my personal aesthetics... A slightly different clip point would have me knocking on your door for a similar one 'cause you know I love that handle/spacer/guard the best, and when coupled with that recurve... well, it's danged impressive, Craig!!!!! And it's truly beautiful Ivory you're using!

I love it all, even STeven's mosaic pin!;) Nice work Craig... any chance we can see the smaller recurve?

Thanks for all of the comments!. When I took on this project It was for two large bowie knives. The specifications were that one was a recurve, one was to be large, the fittings were to be damascus and the handle material should be ivory. The last thing I was told was to be creative. So I forged out the blades, ground, heat treated and finished them. At this point I traced the blades onto some large drawing paper and expieramented with different handle designs. I came up with quite a few different designs but as this one was ordered as a bowie I decided on the handle that is on the recurve. While I realize that the knife doesn't have the classical recurve fighter handle, although I now have a few drawings for later projects as a result of the experimentation I did on the handle design, it does a have a very unique and alive feel to it in the hand.
I will be finishing up the other bowie over the weekend and will post a few pics of it once it is finished.

I'll bet that does have a unique feel to it. Great looking knife, Craig. You need to tag a name on that one. Anxious to see its partner.
