D@amn he makes 'em sharp! I picked this Avenger recurve up last week, thanks to a very generous Artsig1, who sadly needed to sell off a few pieces for personal reasons. Thanks Art, your pricing was more than reasonable.

This one was delivered to Art by RJ just in the last couple of weeks. The Avenger has a 4 1/4" blade of S30V. That's HUGE for my collection. Until now, the Lochsa was the largest I owned with a 3.6" blade. I tend to collect primarily framelocks and this one is one of the better examples in the genre. to quote Chieh Allen Lee at the USN forums, it looks like something out of an HR Giger nightmare. It just looks alive with those half scales of G-10. Sharp is an understatement, draw the blade an 1/8th of an inch above the arm, and hair starts dropping to the floor. You don't even have to touch the skin. It actually shaves the top of the hair off the arm!

A few other unique items include the thumbdisc, which you need to leverage the massive blade from beneath its shell. Speaking of the blade, you can't help but to notice those machined grooves on the blade. They add to that alive feeling when you see the Avenger. It's skin-like in appearance. The last thing I notice is that the blade just doesn't seem like it will fit within those handles. I don't know how he did it, but RJ managed to stuff this massive 4 1/4" blade into the 5 3/8" handles.

With my collection, I found myself drawn to ti framelocks. That's not exactly unique around these parts and fortunately, there are many 'good' ones from which to choose. Like my Lochsa and Obenauf framelocks that came before it, I think I've added another one of the 'great' ones to my collection once again!

Anyway...onto the photos.

Excellent score, Patrick. That model is one of the most comfortable and sure folders I have ever handled. Enjoy that knife.

What a catch!! Can u give a rough estimate of what u paid for it and what is the price for a new one? I have a Japanese chef knife that has machined grooves on the blade and it work wonders to separate the thin slices frim sticking to the blade. Very nice functional design. I like!!

Thanks Kevtan,
A new Avenger is $450 or $475 (I think) and I bought this one for $350 off the Customs for Sale forum here at BFC (you can probably find the thread if interested). It had been delivered to the original owner by the maker just a week before I bought it. So, it's virtually brand new, right off RJ's bench. Sadly, the original owner had some personal obligations and needed to sell off a few knives. I just got lucky, I guess. Goes to show that the secondary market is alive and kicking here at BFC!!

Thanks again Art! This one's a great catch.

Sorry to butt in -
did you guys know Randall J. Martin used to make knives like this -
before he did more tactical stuff with very thick blades?

He called this an Arctic drop-point - with mammoth ivory scales - another one was featured in Blade magazine some months before I got this from him in August/1990.

Evidently RJ Martin is a very very versatile maker. I have one of his oriental, wrapped handle tanto fixed blades. It came with two magnetic lined mahogany sheaths (one for the belt and one neck knife.

Googled him up and drooled at the sight of his knives. The Avenger Comes in 2 blade shape. Not a rocket scientist but in the same line....

Nice catch. Got to keep an eye on the trades forums.....

R.J. is a VERY versatile maker and is really getting into these framelock folders at this time. The Avenger i sold Patrick is one more fine example of his work....and the photo's Patrick puts up are EXCELLENT! I really hated to let the Avenger go as it is a very nice carry piece and excellent in the fit department. The one thing I noticed more than any other was the snap of the knife when you closed it...........it sounded and felt like a big 'ole slipjoint closing.

This knife just gives you a sure feeling of excellence and the knowledge that it will not fail you!

Btw, I've had some problems with my teeth and as much as I wanted to keep the Avenger and a few others I ended up selling, i wanted to have my front teeth a little bit more!!! And never forget thatthere is always tomorrow!!!! :D

artsig1, it always pains the heart to let one of the babies go but sometimes u got to prioritise and choose. It would break my heart to let this baby go... But there is always tomorrow!! I just had a CT done and would choose as u did.
