A new sheath for my Esee

Last year I got an Esee-4 with out a sheath because I like making my own. I started working on a few different sheath designs for the knife, but didn't really like any for my self. So yesterday I made a simple sandwhich sheath with shim and low ride belt loop.

The sheath was made from 8-10oz Brown Saddle Skirting from Wickett & Craig. Hand stitched with 6 strand Linen thread. Normally the back of the sheath is 1 thickness except near the shim, but this time I was playing around and made it thicker. Used a leather punch to make the laneyard hole instead of a drill bit, and the leather was a little to thick for the hole do to 2 layers in the back. Live and learn:

Aside from a small glitch or two I'm really happy with the sheath. What do you all think? And feel free to post some of your own home made sheaths.

I have done leatherwork in the past as a hobby and have a half-done foldover-style vertical sheath for my rc-3 .....I folded the belt loop over from the back piece to the front-side mouth opening and I don't think it's going to work out too well.......also it's gonna be tough to hand punch holes and sew but it's a learning experience.....

Could take a picture of you you attached the belt loop? I'd appreciate it.

Also, it looks like there are 6 layers of leather.....two on the bottom including the back and part of the belt-loop....I'm guessing the next two are 'shims' or 'spacers' where the blade fits in.....so did you put two layers on the top to make it even all around or am I wrong about how the pieces of leather are set? (looking at the side-view fit).

Wow that's nice looking. Love the leather color.

You should make something like this for the Izzy... i'd buy it in a heart beat. :)

your sheath looks good, i like leather for some of my knives and kydex or plastic or cordura for others. just depends on what i'm doin with the knife.

here are a couple pics of one of mine

Yep, there are 6 layers. The belt loop is 2 layers, the shims 2 layers, then a welt (lines up with the spine and edge. to protect stitching) and then the front layer. Normally I don't do the belt loop as two layers, figured I'd try it for fun.

Am heading home in a few minutes, will try to get some pictures after I get settled.

If you have a drill press, take a thin nail, or sharpen the back side of a thin drill bit turning it into an al. Then chuck the al in the drill press and drill like normal. The spinning action helps the improvised al slip in and out of the leather easier. Makes a nicer hole then with a regulare drill bit.

Wow that's nice looking. Love the leather color.

Thanks! Just sent you an email.

Thanks Dave! You do some nice leather work also. I'm with you, I like all 3 materials, depending on my mood and application. The tooling on your sheaths is pretty nice, I like it simple. Should probably start doing more on some of my sheaths. It's been a few years since I did much. BTW I like the handle mod, looks really nice.

here's the one I did last weekend for my Koster BOB knife (that I also put osage orange scales on)
pouch sheath with foldover loop -- dyed it dark brown for contrast with the handle and to hide the marginal job I did with stitching, then gave it a coat of sno-seal.
