I just got a Buck 501 with micarta handle scales. I figure this is a good way to see if I want to order a 501 from the Buck custom shop. I carry this one around for a couple of months to see how I like it. I also have a 500 Duke my old man gave me back in 1981. that knife has micarta handle scales and it traveled around the world with me as a USAF Crewchief.

Sometime in the late 80's Buck changed the blade shape of the Duke. Giving it more belly at the front curve of the blade. This to me gave it a more appealing look. Nice knives. DM

Those are nice Bucks. Did the 500 loose the tip at some point? Looks like it's been reprofiled.

The tip was rounded and yes it was lowered a little. The odd thing about the 501 is that it definitely has micarta scale covers but the blade code places it as 2013 manufacturing. I thought micarta was limited to the early 1980's?

It wE prbably sent in under bucks warranty and rebladedwith a new blade.....nice, I saw that while it was floating but did not go as high as you, instead I picked up a set of 4 501' s that come with a belt buckle....2 things I do not need more of are knives and belt buckles...

Yea, I saw it, I liked it and just did the buy it now button. It was well within my budget and I like the micarta handled Bucks.

The 501 Buck is a nice little knife. Mine is in micarta also and was re-bladed several years ago. Thin profile and has enough blade above the grip to pinch open if need be. Takes and keeps a good edge also. I think mine goes back to the late 70s or early 80s. One of the few that has stayed with me over a long period of time.

Yes, Buck brought out the 501 in 1975. Your blade stamp being 2008 must be a reblade. DM

I carried a 501 in my pocket while in the Army and for years afterwards. I passed it down to my nephew. It is a great knife.

I wish Buck would go back to micarta on these knives. Somehow, the dymond wood just does not have the same feel.

The dymond wood just feels cheap and the micarta is almost industructable.
