I have been admiring the barlows everyone posts on here for a while now, especially all the saw cut ones. Well today I got one of my own. I stopped in to a local shop and found this Camilus 51. The main blade has a little damage from what looked like a grinder or dramel but not so bad enough that it doesn't deserve a second chance. Is there anyway to tell just how old this knife is?

Howdy M Mitt , congrats on your find! I'm a big fan of Camillus knives. Not always a lot of frills, but they are solid and take and hold a great edge.

The Camillus Tang stamps and dates thread over in the Camillus Collector's Forum is handy for aproximate dating of knives based on their tang stamps. You'll see that what's there agrees with GasMan1 GasMan1 's assessment.

Enjoy that barlow!

The Camillus 51 and similar Camco 551 are the Barlows that I recall in use by a lot of folks in the 70's. My first traditional type knife was a Camillus 51 with "wonderwood" delrin handles, back in the early 80's. A great knife to carry!

Thanks, Neal
