So, a couple weeks ago I asked a question on the forum. Everyone was extremely helpful and I decided to make sure the first khukuri I owned a HI. Man, was that a good call on my part. On 7/7 I snagged a DOTD and sharked a 17.5 inch WWII by Dharan Kami with all white-metal fittings. Yangdu was a delight to correspond with, and I was wowed by her level of customer service and also the teleporter she must have used to get me the Khukuri within a few days.

I was stunned by how beautiful the blade is, and was really taken aback by how beefy it is. Living in the great city of New York, I can’t go out and wail on some trees or give you guys any bucolic photos, but this is without a doubt the first knife I’m going to grab when I go camping this summer.

By my measurements the blade is 12 inches and the handle is about 5.5 inches. There are no kami markings on the blade (don’t know if that’s normal or not) and it ends in a beautiful point. Anyway, I included some pictures that I took with the camera on my phone. Excuse their poor quality. I couldn’t be happier with my khukuri and can't wait to take it out into the wilderness with me. And, as a former chef, I can definitely see using my new Khukuri in the kitchen. Thanks Yangdu :D!

Warm welcome to HI and Foum:)

I ... was really taken aback by how beefy it is.

That was my first reaction as well... far more knife than I had ever held in my hand before. They're just so dang balanced that its hard to believe you are holding that much steel in your hand. You just get the feeling that.... you could chop your way through the wall of a house if you needed to. That's a lot to say about a knife that you wear on your belt. Congrats & welcome!

Nice looking blade Corruptor, congratulations! I remember that one from the DOTD, I'm also a big fan of the white metal fittings and full tangs. Hope you enjoy it.

Welcome:)

A WWII is a great camping knife. That one will give you and many generations after you a lifetime of faithful service.

Welcome! You're on your way and I hope you have a lot of good times with your new baby.

Great choice:)
My WW II 17 and 3/4" Chiruwa handle IS my favorite khukuri.

Welcome, chop safe, have fun and get ye to some woods:D

If you haven't seen this video before, it should confirm your opinion of the WWII's usefulness in the kitchen:

I've got a WWII that looks just like that (the 16.5" WWII and the 15" AK were my first HI pieces). It's a great khukuri and when I hear the word "khukuri," I first think about the WWII even though I now have more than 2 dozen HI pieces around the house. I don't quite have a piece of cutting board that big, however, even though I do have Iron Chef fantasies every now and then. Watching that video brings a smirk to my face.

Thanks for the warm welcome guys, and I'm glad to be a part of the club. I can't wait to take it out into the woods, but truth be told, it's hard to do when you live in the city. In the meantime, the khuk will be by my bedside and in the kitchen.

I have a BBQ I'm cooking for this weekend and I'm looking forward to me and this khuk slaving away in the kitchen on Friday night. I love that cooking video, and am glad to see how well it did, especially when it came to cleaning that fish. I might be backing a whole side of ribs this weekend, and if my buddy will lend me his camera, I'll def try and post something.

I LOVE to use my khuk whenever I can :)

I've trimmed cuts of meat and hacked and split logs with it.

My 15" CAK(villager) is my new best friend. I ended up slicing my finger yesterday while chopping, not from the knife though, but from the jagged log haha. Good thing I had my sharpened karda to dig the mud from out of my wound; the lady was grossed out :D:D

Congratulations on your sweeet chiruwa WWII:thumbup: Corruptor and welcome to the Forum and HI. You're gonna have so much fun when you go camping:D, but if you're going with other folks I'm sure they are going to want to "borrow" your new tool after they see what it will do.

Your khukuri was made by a Dharan kami which is to say that he is not one of HI's official kamis. He made this and it met HI standards so HI bought it from him and sold it to you. The kami marks, UB mark and Devengari "Hee" & "Eee" won't be on a blade that didn't come out of HI's BirGorkha facility by their kamis.

Be safe and have fun.

Peace

Rick

I don't think this question deserves it's own thread, can anyone tell me if all the WW2 models are full tang construction, or does it depend on the Kami that makes it. To clarify, by full tang I mean as in Corruptor's pictures, three pins in a solid steel tang, while every picture and video I've seen of the Ang Khola has a rat tail tang, a thin tang that extended to the end of the handle and is peened or secured via a nut.

This is the only thing that makes me hesitate to buy a HI.

The "Full Tang" is usually referred to as "Chiruwa" around here as sometimes the term full tang is used to describe the "Rat Tail" tang peened at the buttcap.

Mostly it depends on the Kami that makes the blade. Here at H.I. they usually stick to mostly predefined patterns, but have been known to mix it up a little at times.

Most of your WWII and BAS models will be made with a Rat Tail tang and most of your M-43 models will be made with a chiruwa handle, although they can be made with either handle by special order. The Ang Khola is Rat tail tang while the Chiruwa Ang Khola is made in the method you describe.

H.I. makes it's Rat Tail tangs the toughest on the market. It is far beefier than you will usually find on any other khukuri. It's stoutness paired with peening at the buttcap makes it nearly as indestructable as the chiruwa model. The difference is really so slight as to be negligible. Some people feel that the chiruwa handles transmit more of the shock thru the handle into the hands, others don't feel this. I would have no problem trusting my life to either style of blade as long as it was one of H.I.'s khukuris.

Thank you for the information, when I decide it's time to get my first Khukri I'll have to special order it. It's nothing against H.I of course, I just never trust rat tail tangs; blame my history with Chinese production Katana ;)
