A nice alternative to the Benchmade Warranty Voiding Kit.

I needed to move the clip on one of my Lum's to make it easier to withdraw from a pouch and noticed Spyderco has gone over to torx on the clips (and most everywhere else), and I didn't have torx drivers that small. I've considered getting the Benchmade warranty cancellation kit but instead I found a nice kit of torx drivers from Wiha: set 26798. All the same torx sizes (T6, T7, T8, T9, T10, and T15) as the BM kit, but these rotating-cap precision drivers rather than just bits -- and with a roll up case too.

Got it today and I can give it up a thumbs up after doing a quick change on the clip of my foliage Lum.

An easy set to get online -- I got mine at Amazon.

Interesting. I've always assumed that the precision driver would make it hard to put adequate downward force on the screw in order to prevent it from stripping the head. Still, Wiha seems to be the #1 name for those screws, and my Benchmade torx bits are a bit pathetic in that one has been twisted out of shape from unscrewing the torx screws on my Spyderco Gayle Bradley(hate that threadlocker).

A big part of it is the proper precision fit - I'd imagine the benchmade bits are not quite the precision tool that the Wiha bits are.

I've used Wiha for years disassemling Apple computers, etc.

i use a husky torx screwdriver set, it has (4) two sided torx bits.

That really is an excellent item (especially for the money). It was the one that finally managed to break free a very reluctant screw that had resisted everything else I tried (especially the crappy BM Bluebox).
Lowes sells what I believe is the same thing under their Kobalt brand name.

I've heard so many good things about Wiha, I finally picked up a Wiha 38003 Multi-Bit Torx Screwdriver with Power Handle, T5-T10. Seems well made, but haven't had a chance to test it yet....I think the long "Power Handle" should take care of anything the Husky can't.

Been using a Wiha set bought on amazon after striping some screws with my cheepo torx drivers

I use the same. Has gotten the job done so far. The Wiha kit looks like better quality though.

the husky hasn't failed me yet (i've used it for more than just my knives). if/when it does, i'll definitely get a higher quality set which would probably be the wiha L-wrench set.

To be fair it is also a Spyderco warranty voiding kit.

I still don't understand how a post on the Spyderco forums by a Spyderco employee trumps the lawyer written warranty paper that ships with every knife. But it does and disassembled Spydercos technically no longer have a factory warranty. There have also been a few threads on the forums showing this is the case and some knives have been turned down because they were taken apart.

The difference is that Spyderco isn't selling a branded torx kit specifically intended for use with their knives. If I get 3rd party kit and take my knife apart despite the warranty warning, then that is a choice that I am responsible for. It is a well noted and oft discussed irony that Benchmade sells a branded torx kit that voids their warranty if used on their knives.

This is true. Clips can be moved and pivots adjusted but I guess they provide more sizes than is necessary to do those tasks.

This might be a stupid question, but unless you mod the knife, how is it evident that it was disassembled? As in a thorough cleaning.

Great Info, just ordered one, My Craftsman set is getting kinda beat. :D

As I recall, a lot of time what happens is that the customer disassembles the knife, then can't get it back together again -- then sends the pile back to Spyderco. Aside from that, no idea.

Even when people reassemble a D4, it is not uncommon for the backspacer to get fouled up.
