Nice blade! I love that handle material you used. How did you get that hardening line on the O1 steel?

Thanks for the comments guys! I used a torch (oxyacetylene) to selectively harden the edge of the blade. It achieves a similar effect as using clay, but is far faster and easier. The drawback is that it can be tough to get the entire edge evenly heated to the proper temperature. Alos, this is about as large a blade as can easily be done like that. (I've done bigger, but it's tricky.) I'm planning to start using the clay heat treating techniques as soon as I can get my hands on some satanite:)

Sorry, this one's already spoken for:)

I was thrilled with the maple... I like to order my stabilized wood from the Bybees, (Alpha Knife Supply) because they have pictures of a great many pieces on their website. As soon as I saw the picture of this piece, I had to get it!

I've also been using an oxy/acetylene setup for my 0-1 blades and have had better luck with a rosebud attachment for larger blades (6-8 inch). It uses up the gas a lot quicker but it also gives a larger heating area to work with. Have you tried this or are you using a regular cutting tip? Anyway, looks great! I've tried to use some figured maple and have had problems with discoloration (greying). Does stabilizing seem to solve this?

I've been using the cutting attachment, as I can never seem to think to get a heating tip. It works alright, but I'm sure the rosebud would make it far easier:)

I'm gonna try and get away from doing it this way though. I'd like to use clay and use my forge for heat. I can get a slightly active hamon with the torch, but it's not easy and nearly impossible to make each side match.

As far as stabilized wood goes, the way I understand it is that it's not going to change on you. So it really shouldn't change at all visually speaking, over time. If you've never worked with stabilized woods, I feel like it's well worth the extra $$$. I've been sanding mine to 1200 grit, then rubbing a little furniture polish on it. And that's it:) Very easy, and it looks GREAT.

Okay that's it! I'm a DLG groupie now :D Stunning knife and sheath.

Nice knife! Shape, of both blade and handle appeals to me.
Can't say I like the thong hole in the middle, but that's minor.

My only complaint is with the sheath - keeperstraps set up to open on the edge side simply suck... I've cut every one of 'em off of all of my sheaths as the blade both hangs up on withdrawl and the tab eventually gets sliced anyway... :( Otherwise, I do like the sheath itself...

If I were ever run into you at a show, I'd love to handle that knife! Keep up with the good work! :D

You know I feel the same way about keeper straps on the front side... But for whatever the reason, this strap's natural position after being unsnapped is not quite in the path of the edge. *shrug* Maybe I got lucky:)

The thong hole is not really my preference either, this is an updated version of a knife I had made a while back and the guy wanted that knife, which had a thong hole placed in the middle. If I make anymore of this design, I'ms ure I'll go with a 1/8th of even 3/16th inch solid pin instead. Or perhaps a mosaic pin would look good:)

I'm trying to work up several designs which I can start produce on a (somewhat) regular basis, this might be a good one to use:)

*edited to add* Holy crap! My very own groupie!!! :D

OH thats just great another knifemaker i have to add to my must have list ! Awesome Handle on this sucker and that sheath WOW !!!
