it's Buff headwear- a polyester microfiber "tube" that can be worn several different ways

they have replaced the venerable bandana in all my kits- like a bandana they can be used for lots of different things- pre-filtering water, pot holder, first aid applications, the list goes on and on

besides versatile, they're also light too- 1.4 oz

My wife loves them. They come impregnated with permethrins to kill bugs also. She has lots of hair and it keeps it contained under her hat.

Personally, I just like a hat. I keep a triangle bandage in my kit that can be used as a bandana if needed, or as a triangle bandage.

Anyone have any experience with the merino buffs from buffwear.com? They're calling me, I think I need one.

I have several of the Buffs and love em! I have found that I tend to generate a lot of heat when hiking and a hat just holds it in. I am bald, so I have to have something to keep my head from cooking. The Buff works great. It keeps the sun off and the sweat from running into my eyes. Plus it provides some cooling too. I use it when mowing to keep the dust and other crap out of my lungs.

I take at least one buff with me everytime I go out. They are usually around my wrist till I need them !!!

I have an insect shield one that I will be testing out in Peru.

FWIW, I've had and LOVED my recon wrap for years, and I think a Merino wool one would be awesome in the winter! Time to go sell a knife

I still have several neck gaiters left over from the Army. Great, simple piece of gear.

Where did you get the permethrin-impregnated one, K?

I have one that I treated with Repel brand Permanone for clothing and gear. A 6 oz. can at wally world costs under $5 I had my doubts about this stuff until I used the treated buff in heavy bug country this summer. I had all sorts of flying bugs dive bombing my head and face until I pulled the buff tube out of my bag and put it on my head. Instant relief.

Alas, us Canadians are not to be trusted with such efficacious mixtures. :(

I've been eyeballing the merino one as well :)

bumping this old thread as I've had my Merino Buff for a couple of weeks now- it's a little longer than the syn ones- long enough you can fashion a pretty nice watch cap w/ it

the merino really feels nice and definitely a plus in the cold- I carry it daily

I'll probably go back to the syn one for summer use, but fall and winter the merino one wins out

I use the merino buff under my helmet all the time, it keeps sweat off my face in summer and adds enough warmth to my head and ears inm winter without being restrictive
very nice piece of kit

Why did you all have to bump this up. I was trying to find the site to buy one today, but I couldn't. Now I have no excuse.
