I took my Avid model of this Ergo Hunter Small Game (491) early this year on a fishing trip and everyone that used it to clean their trout really liked the way it handled and cut. The surface of the fish cleaning station is stainless steel and I figured that I would have to sharpen the blade when we were done removing the heads and tails, but that wasn't necessary. The 12C27mod held up great and if it dulled any I can't tell. I'm hoping that the S30V used on the Pro holds up as well.

I just aquired the Pro model (492) and I can't wait to try it out. the Avid has all Dymondwood Rosewood scales where the Pro has rubber with Rosewood inserts. It's not as estheticly pleasing to me as the all Rosewood, I can see where it will give an even better grip than the checkered Rosewood of the Avid when your hands are covered with fish slime.

There is also a definate difference in the blade profile. The Avid has more of a "Wharncliffe" design where the Pro is more of a drop point.

Dave, I like the looks of the pro more... That's just me... And for cleaning fish that rubber handle would work great, I think... Nice knives and some great pics... I'm sure you will love that new one with that S30V blade... ITE ...

I like em both. I do like the offset of colors between the black and rosewood myself. I'm sure the s30v will hold up as well or better. Better get up to the lake and catch some to test that theory though:D

Nice pics and write up Dave!

I am surprised you bought the Pro in that model ;) I prefer the looks of the roswood handle also, but that grip is grippy :D

S30V makes up for alot too ;) Although, I dont have any issues whatsoever with mine in Sandvik!

I am surprised to see the blade vary so much for the knife being basically the same model! I think I may need to pick one up now :D

DAVE, Thanks for the pictures of your catch, 'both catagories' . I like the Rainbow and the Pro and the all wood handle . Which should give a decent grip being checkered . DM ;)

OK, Nice comparison Dave.
I definetly like the droppoint pattern of the Pro more.
I definetly like the rosewood of the Avid more.
I'm almost neutral on the steel almost...with a slight favor to the S30V.

I would like to hear from Hubbard or someone in the know about this difference in blade pattern. Is it a change or is there a planned difference between the Avid and Pro or something else?

Interesting Photos!!

LOL, sounds like good reasons to me Dave! Heck, you dont need reason to buy a Buck :D

Theres quite a few online for sale, all 3 models have both blade shown. I wonder if the older models were more drop point, or wharncliffe, or vise-versa? There is definately a difference in the 2 blade designs.

Both of mine are 2009 models.
