hey fellows! this is one of my latest projects. i got the head off of the bay for under 20 bucks. i had to do quite a bit of file work on the poll (all 4 sides) and clean her up quite a bit (i forgot to take 'before pics'), but all in all i think she turned out pretty good. shes hung on a 32" octangle haft...

AFTER LOOKING AT SOME OLDER PICTURES THAT I HAVE FOUND, I THINK THIS AXE IS ACTUALLY A BALTIMORE KENTUCKY PATTERN!
i new that it wasent a 'true jersey' but it is very close. i found some old ad pics from a collins catalog and it look like it may be the BK pattern...

OA weight: 5lb 7oz

OA length: 30 3/4"

head length: 7 1/8"

bit: 5"

poll: 3 3/4" x 1 1/4"

hope you enjoy the pics... :)

Nice job Bear
I like how everything blends together. That poll looks new! Nice day for photos and a cool critter.
Hangman will get over it!:D
Thanks for the pics.

Good job with that octagonal haft! I'm going to have to pick one of those up to try out sometime.

Nice job, Brother. Seriously looks fantastic. I hope you dont mind if i try to shamelessly copy you...it is the most sincere form of flattery...

Top notch, my man.

Hi Bear. Wow Man She's a beauty. A great all rounder. You just had to put up that 'end on' shot for 'Hang Man' eh Bro.

I may be looking in the wrong places but I don't see old Jersey pattern axes here. I know new ones made by Collins can be bought but I'm not interested in new stuff. I don't see any new axes that have the finish, style or character of the old stuff.
I do see a lot of old colonial hatchets of a similar pattern but no big axes.

I must say I really like the style. Yours looks like it has good weight in the poll. I also like the contrast of the square look complimented by the rounded (wings). Is there a correct name for this part of an axe.

Great back drop for you pics too mate. Keep up the good work'

regards...Frank

thanks frank!

she does have good balance and swings 'effortlessly'. i simply love a straight haft...

those rounded 'wings' are called 'lugs'...

Lugs...Ok, that's my lesson for today.

I respect your choice, but we differ on haft style. I just love the curve shape with a nice deep belly. Do you ever find the straight haft causes jarring?

I must say the more I see the pics the more I like the axe. Can just imagine you walking out of the bush after a days work with her over your shoulder. Bet you wouldn't just chuck her into the corner of the shed.

regards...Frank

Great job.

Billyjbluegrass on 'bay for octagonals. As bearhunter says, they pop up know and again.

Beautiful work However beat up it was before you got to it you sure can't tell. I've noticed some variation on the plumb stamps, seems like the older heads had square corners and smaller marks, as that one does. Jealous!

thanks for the kind comments everyone :)

vintage; yeah i've wondered about that too. i think that the ones with that type of stamp are older pieces, but i could be wrong... it seems that the newer ones also have a stamp for weight, this one has no such stamping...

btw; i sent you a message. did you get it?
