FWIW - Just finished reading Mark Wileys "Filipino Fighting Arts-Theory and Practice."

Its one heck of a good book, and one that you gain more from with each successive perusal.

Would Love to see a simlar comprehensive work done on FMA and Indonesian edged weapons and striking implements.........

HINT-HINT;)

Wiley has already written a book which carries out just the sort of review you are interested in - it is called Filipino Martial Culture.
From recall Wiley examines the weapons of each of the island groups covering Projectile, Impact, Flexible and Edged weapons. Well worth reading. He also goes in to the more esoteric aspects such as Anting-Anting and Orascion as well as looking at the history and culture of the Philippines.

A similar study was carried out with regard to Indonesian Silat Arts by the late, great, martial arts historian Donn F Draeger. I think it was called Fighting Arts and Weapons of the Indonesian Archipelago - but you can check with Amazon.com (that's where I got it (but I've misplaced it around the flat somewhere!), although it might be on the book stands in the States).

Hope my post helps

Respectfully

Harry :)

Pete,
If you want a book that is similar to the Wiley book recommended, I suggest you look and see if you can find the book by Punong Guro Edgar Sulite (Lameco eskrima). This book's title is Masters of Arnis,Kali, and Eskrima, it covers instructors from the Philippines that PG Sulite met and trained with. This book is one of the better books written on the FMA. You might want to check with the guys at Bakbakan International (www.Bakbakan.com)or check with the Dog Brothers to see if they carry it.. It is a good book, I have had one in my collection for close to 5 yrs and I enjoy re-reading when ever we lose power on Gilligan's Island (Guam):D
