A noob, knife price, and edging towards collecting

I've always been a lower cost production, utilitarian knife purchaser. I always looked at price as the main determining factor when making my selections, followed closely by quality. Up until about 6 mos. ago, I wouldn't be caught dead forking over more than $100 for ANY knife. I scoffed at friends who would plunk down $550 for a custom job, and follow it with "what can your Sebenza do that my Leek couldn't?" Then, I started to put things in the proper perspective.

Most folks who enjoy knives, have a love of firearms as well. What if I looked at knives like I look at firearms?

I would never dream of spending less than $500 on a new pistol, and as most of you know, $500 will get you a good middle-of-the-road heater. I'm in the middle of building a rifle right now and will probably have over $1300 in it not counting glass, when its all said and done. I can buy a high quality knife from a major manufacturer for a hell of a lot less than I can buy a Glock, for instance. I can also get a whole lot more use out of that knife on a DAILY basis. A nice custom, hand-fit blade will still be a hell of a lot cheaper than a higher end hand fitted semi-production level 1911, like an STI Trojan. I'm realizing that full custom knives are art. I can't say that about most guns of equivalent monetary value.

Since that epiphany I've purchased a Benchmade Morpho Bali-song and just got received Spyderco Tuff yesterday (freakin' love the Tuff by the way). I know that ain't exactly collector grade stuff, but it has certainly pushed me out of my comfort zone and made me appreciate what most of you have already known.

So to all of you who I may have rolled my eyes at, I'm sorry. You were SOOOO right! Now get off of your ass and buy a quality knife...you don't know what you're missing! :D

And it begins. If you like that tuff you must be into some "beefier" folders. That tuff is your "gateway" knife as someone else put it. It won't be long until you're selling a gun to buy a hinderer or crk. Mark my words;) have fun with your new appreciation for high end knives. I suggest working your way up so you don't feel bad about using them. That is where the real appreciation is for me. My xm18 or sebenza 25 may not cut up a box better than a para 2 but it sure is more fun using them! Granted, right tool for the job applies here.

Nothing wrong with collector grade pieces. I am pumped to be on Tom Krein's Alpha list. Will his Alpha out perform a ten dollar Opinel? No. But there is just something to holding and owning a fully custom folder from one of the top dogs in the industry.
