A November lonely hike

Hi there! Out alone this Monday for a hike :). Unusual, but I had one day to recover for travelling for work last weekend. Wife to work, kids to schools/kindergarten... a good opportunity for some time on my own. So long time since I was out alone! Woke up 0530 AM and headed for the valley. Weather was fantastic, crisp and chilly breeze, blue sky  . Still dawning when I parked the car and took the trail. The first half an hour was quite boring, the trail, in the beginning, is an old gravel lumberjack road getting out of the village but, as soon as I crossed the first mountain pass, taking the “real” trail bringing me through a larch trees wood, the scenery became breath taking. I walked on frosted ground, waiting for the sun to fully rise over the mountain tops. Suddenly the whole valley appeared, adorned for the occasion with a spectacular sprinkle of snow. The first snow of the year for me, snow I stepped on for a rather long stretch, taking me to the top of a high panoramic cliff I had as final destination (2044 mt). The day got warmer as the hours went by and I stopped for a quick snack before heading back home. After my light lunch few clouds came in, turning the shiny bright colours of the morning into more pastel shades. Though this trail is generally a well travelled one, on a working Monday, I met no one. With me this time just an Opinel #8, didn’t play with it so much, this time was more walking :D! Back in time in the afternoon to fetch the kids at the bus stop :). Just to share!

AHHHH, so beautiful, I am sitting here on the northern side of the Alps, and everthing is burried under a thick layer of fog.

Absolutely beautiful scenery. Thanks for sharing. Where exactly is that located?

Beautifull pics.
Makes me want to go to Italy in my next summer vacation!
Thanks for sharing.

awesome views! nothing like seeing untrampled snow and being the first to put foot prints on it :) what's the story behind that cross? is it a grave site?

Hi! Thanks for your kind comments. Glad you like the post :)!

@ Broady: Yes, it’s a public trail (C.A.I. Bergamo # 118). There are not many “private” trails here. Most of the alpine trails are traced, equipped, kept and maintained by members of C.A.I. (Club Alpino Italiano), organized volunteers who also take care of manning several mountain huts and bivouacs. Few “private” trails belong to WWF or National/Regional Parks and one may be asked an entry fee.

@ Flipe8: This is a valley in Bergamo Province. The trail starts from the small village of Piazzatorre (Bergamo).

@ John A. Larsen: the building pictured here is basically a stable, used during the summer, according to the ancient practice of transhumance. In summertime the cattle is taken from the villages in the valleys to the high pastures and taken back at the beginning of Autumn. This one, like several others in the area, is also equipped with a basic cheese factory.

@ knoefz: Please do! It’s a great country and some less travelled areas (from a mass tourism perspective) are truly gems.

@ JV3: Thanks! It’s very common here in South Europe to find crosses on the peaks of the mountains. Some of them have a guest book where one can leave a short message.

In Italy some of them have a meaning, e.g. those remembering the fallen brothers of Alpine Troops during WWI and WW2, some others are just marks, to indicate the maximum elevation of the peaks. When I served in the Alpine Troops (twenty something years ago), one of the tasks for the summer camps was to refurbish/re-build the crosses. We were carrying all the construction materials and had some memorials celebration. One of the most beautiful songs we sang was “Signore delle Cime”
