I am curious what everyone’s thoughts on the proper balance point is and why? I understand it depends on what the knife will be used for, so for sake of argument let’s start with a fixed blade - hunter/utility/edc and go from there. thanks, Darren

Small knives?
Butt heavy.
So they sit in my hand if I want to use the index finger and thumb of that hand.

As the blades get bigger (generally) the balance point goes forward.

YMMV
:D

I think personal preference is also a factor. I like fighters and the sort to balance at my index finger and camp/hunter/survival knives to be blade heavy with the most mass being about one-third of the blade length from the tip.

Hmmm Great minds think alike
Was just about to post this as a new thread but thought it relevant enough to post here
IMO balance on a knife with a blade less than 6" should fall here>>>
Balance on a blade that is larger say a Full sized (What Ranger Bob said) should be about an inch in front of the guard
Taking in to account handle weight

Balancing Act

You can have a light, balanced stout blade. How its achieved is a matter of preference

I feel a larger knife/fighter should be a little blade heavy so that with my eyes closed or in an unlit room I know where the point is....
