I just scored a nice RAM 1910CKT with a born on date of Sept 08. I know Kershaw was in a transitional period sometime around then when they were switching from 13c26 to the 14c28n steels. I'm wondering if anyone can tell me if my RAM has the 13c26 or the 14c28n steel. I have a feeling it's the 13c26, but would like to know for sure.

Just checked a KAI press release, if you have the DLC coated blade, it should be 14c28n.

The blade is DLC coated. Could you give me a link to the press release? I'd love to read it. I've done a search on the forum here trying to find out for sure exactly when the RAM switched from 13c26 to the newer 14c28n, but can't seem to find out anything other than all knives which were 13c26 would for sure be switched over by March of '09. I'm just curious as to whether my RAM was switched earlier, or not.

Judging from that press release it would appear that all the dlc coated ones are the 14c28n. Thanks for the link to the press releases. Great reading.

Weren't those knives with date codes 13c steel though? Tat has been the case on some threads asking about Leeks, Shallots, etc.

Man, I have no idea. That's why I'm asking. I saw two of these RAMS where I got mine. One was a first production run and had a date code of August 08, and mine had a Sept 08 date code. So, it appears the black dlc coated ones were started right during the transition period. So, I'm not sure if the press release is accurate for all of them, even the early ones, or not. Perhaps Thomas or Jimmer can chime in to confirm.

That would be ideal. I remember clearly that there were threads indicating, older blades with date stamps, meant they were the 13C steel. Possibly the RAM was different.

The real mystery is what steel my blem 1910CKT is, because it doesn't have a production date or box. Oh well, I don't particularly mind either way since I like both steels. My 13c26 Storm might be the sharpest knife I own, or at least it's definitely the one I've cut myself with most often. Same thing? :D

IIRC, if a Kershaw doesn't have a 'born-on' date marked on the blade, it was made after they stopped stamping the 'born-on' date onto their knives. Therefore it would have 14c28 instead of 13c26 as the blade steel.

Unless they have never marked blems with 'born-on' dates in the first place, I guess.

Either way, I do like the knife. It's the most unusual Kershaw I've gotten so far. And, even if the steel is 13c26 it's still pretty good steel. I'm finding that it's one of the most comfortable knives to use also.

I understand your curiosity about which steel your knife is made of, but TBQH you probably wouldn't be able to tell the difference between 13c26 and 14c28 in actual use. IIRC the only major difference between them is that 14c28 is a bit more rust resistant.

What I mean is: don't be disappointed if your RAM turns out not to have the newer steel - it's effectively the same stuff anyway, in my experience.

Thanks Dorito Monk. I think you're right. I doubt I could tell the difference between the two types of steel. But, it would be interesting to know for sure.
