A Paean to the Case Yellow Trapper

Interesting article. I chuckled at the part where he talks about people carrying an $18 pen and an $800 pen. One wants to talk about what he has in his pocket, the other just needs to write something and move on with life. I suppose such is the same with a knife...you can have a stamped shell handle Imperial or a high end custom. They both cut things pretty much the same, I guess it's all about personal preference.

At the end of the day, it's still good to see people writing about pocketknives...

Nice.

I love it when carrying a pocketknife is normalized these days, because it’s been demonized for far too long.

When somebody is in a bind and says “Do you have a pocketknife?” I always answer

“Yea, since I was 8 years old.”

Oh yea, I’m a redneck, too.

me too.
Since I was 7 or 8 and I did actually carry a pocket knife at school quite often too even though I wasn't supposed to, but I wasn't showing it to anybody or really even using it at school.
I just liked having a knife in my pocket, and what they didn't know wasn't hurting them.
If I had gotten caught I probably would have cried though, mostly to try and get out of trouble but also being upset about losing my knife.

This is the part I chuckled at; "Now here’s what really freaked out the Esquire offices. The Case Trapper (are you ready?) was originally made for trapping, harvesting hides from furry animals. The secondary spey blade is dull on the tip, meaning it’s made for long opening cuts when you don’t want to puncture what’s below the animal’s skin. The primary clip-point blade is for intricate work and anything else you’d use a knife for." Not so many years ago everyone at a magazine like Esquire would have know what the blades were for! OH

One of my Case Trappers, this one in Yellow Delrin and commemorating an actor the folks at Esquire would also have recognized 41 years ago when it was made.

I'd have far more trappers if it weren't for the spey blade. In this day and time, I think there are far more relevant and useful blade shapes they could be using for the secondary. Wharncliffe has worked out well, but sheepsfoot or coping would also be very handy. Heck, I'd take a spear secondary long before I'd choose a spey.

I do love my yellow delrin Case trapper with pocket clip. That pocket clip is wicked handy.

I’m an oddball. I actually like the Spey blade a lot.

I know what you mean. I tried my hand at fixing that issue one time with a modification, this was my result. I was quite happy with the blade shape, it worked out perfectly. My challenge came with cutting the nail-nick - I never was happy with the look of the nick, function was perfect. OH

Wow. You did the make the blade perfect in both shape and size. I can't even imagine attempting a nail nick.

If I were to try that (and I might at some point if I get a trapper), I would try to cut a notch in the end of the blade (like on a Leatherman saw blade) to lift it that way. It would probably require cutting an access divot into the handle as well. I don’t trust myself to cut a good nail nick.
