Russ Andrews may not be the best known journeyman smith, but that’s certainly no reflection on the quality of his work. Or maybe, in a way, it is: Russ spends so much time on each knife and is such a perfectionist that there simply aren’t a lot of his knives floating around. His commitment to excellence is very much evident in the product of his craft. These two fighter-bowies share some common traits – forged blades of 1084 steel with looooong flowing clips that stretch almost the entire length of the spine, 416 stainless steel fittings and truly impeccable fit and finish.

The first of the pair features a 7 ½” blade and an overall length of 12”. The handle is ebony.

The second knife features an 8 ¼” blade and an overall length of 13”.

The handle is formed from a particularly nice piece of stag, and is finished with an attractive domed steel but cap.

I hope you’ve enjoyed the pics. My thanks to Danbo for finally yielding to my incessant begging, pleading, whining and arm-twisting and agreeing to part with these fine knives.

Cheers,

Roger

My dear friend Roger,

I am a true believer that one must be responsible for one's action. I must hold you responsible for putting those pictures on the forum and causing a non stop drooling. :)

Both of these knives are a style of bowie that I find particularly to my taste. Along with that, they seem to have exquisite fit and finish. I don't know how you amnaged to get them from Danbo, but you are one lucky fella.

WOW!!! Talk about beautiful! And quality of work? Looks about perfect from my house... :)

Congrats to you Roger on wrassling these away from Danbo. Then again, Danbo's collection is SO good that maybe these are the bottom of the barrel....

NOT!!! ;) :D

(nice work, Murray!)

Wow.

I can attest to the quality of Mr. Andrews' work. I once owned a small bowie of his as well. I gave it to a friend and mentor - a knifemaker who I knew would really appreciate it as it was meant to be appreciated. While I hated to part with the knife, it felt good to give it to my friend, and I'll never regret doing it. That said, it does make me want another one. It makes me want another one real bad - one just like that stag bowie. That knife is awesome!

Thanks for posting these pics Roger.

Roger,
I handled those two knives at the Arkansas show. The fit and finish would pass a Mastersmith rating. Can't believe Dan sold them. Lucky you.

Joss - yep, he's that Ron Newton - who had maybe 4 knives on display at the Arkansas show and walked away with 2 awards  (both of the award-winning knives are pictured in the thread you linked). Danbo had the Andrews knives with him at Arkansas and showed them to Ron and a few other top-flight makers. They were universally impressed. I got to meet Russ Andrews later at dinner with Danbo and Mrs. Danbo - he's a heckuva nice guy as well as a heckuva knifemaker.

Cheers,

Roger

Joss,
Roger's correct. I am the guilty one. I owe Keith Montgomery a big favor for the swell job he's done on showing some of my work.

Hey Danbo,
I'm going to be back at Blade this year manning Darryl's table and will have an exhibit of ABS blades on display - stop by and bring some of your bad boys with you - would love to see them! And I might even let you handle my new Fogg that Don is bringing to me at the Show - have no idea what it is except it won't be a Shiv and won't be a trailing point. Will be a true surprise!

Best,
Bill

WOW

Those are beautiful! And really just the thing I like -- clean, elegant lines, and perfection in fit and finish.

that's all I have to say

O-o-o-h-h-h, Man! I don't think you can come closer to "the perfect knife" than those! I would surely include Ron's work right beside them, too! And these guys are always so modest about their work, also. Definitely Master grade.
