a pair of questions

Hi everyone. I have a couple questions, and I think this is my first post to the Spyderco forum.

1. I'm looking for a new EDC, and am strongly considering the Wegner...except it is a bit large and heavy compared to what I usually carry (mini-AFCK). However, because of everyone's insistence on the magnificence of the Wegner, I am still looking at it. How does it compare in weight to say, a S/S Native? Also, what about the Wegner Jr.? Does it have similar ergonomics? Are they still available anywhere? What do you guys think?

2. Is it feasible to create your own Spyderhole? I've got a Camillus EDC in 154CM that I have been trying to trade or sell away (NIB if anyone wants it). But I think I might actually like it if it had a hole. Has anyone attempted to do so?

Thanks in advance all.

for your second question- if a knife was not designed with a hole in mind, putting one in would weaken the blade. Not to mention the dificulty of cutting/drilling through hardened steel

You answered question #1 in the question. Wegner Jr is the way to go, just a smaller size version of the bigger one. They are still available on the for sale forums here, and I would imagine some dealers have a few left over that they would be happy to sell you.

Having just received my Wegner last week, I am still most enthusiastic about it. It truly is a great knife. And it most certainly is not heavy, it's just perfect for me.

I have heard that the Wegner Jr. is really good too, and I will soon find out as I intend to buy one of these too. Good luck with your decision.

The C48 Wegner weighs 6 oz whereas the the C41 SS Native weighs 4,6 oz.

The idea of creating a larger hole is not new. I believe I ask Sal this question a year ago. His answer then was that it is very difficult not to spoil the heat treatment.

There may also not be enough space for your thumb to reach the hole. This has to do with the broadness of the blade and how deep it rests between the liners.

The third issue is, like mschwoeb said, the risk of weakening the blade.

Thanks a lot guys. If I can find the Jr. for a good price, I think i'll pick it up. Also, i'm going to forget about "holing" my EDC... It wouldn't be worth the risk of destroying it.

Any more suggestions/opinions on the Wegner Jr. or ideas on where I could find one would be appreciated.

Hi Nitin. Welcome to the Spyderco forum.

Drilling a hole in hardened steel is VERY difficult. I would not recommend it without extensive experience and good equipment.

here is a question that kind of applies- are the blades made with the hole in them or is it put in after?
