A Pause In the Acquiring...For Now

I've been hesitating to make this post. After I buy a new knife (for the last few months they've all been Spydies) I think wow, this knife is amazing! Paired with my existing knives, I don't think I need to buy any more! But, as we all know, these kinds of thoughts are always temporary, and then inevitably you end up seeing something else that you need to have. So, my last purchase was a couple months ago and I had that normal reaction...but then I actually stopped wanting more Spydercos (or knives in general). I genuinely think that, at least for the near future, I've hit some kind of EDC nirvana (not a reference to the spyderco nirvana) where every niche is nicely filled and I take joy in carrying every single one of my current knives. It's pretty nuts! I spend tons of time surfing around online knife stores trying to find that next Spyderco that's calling out to me but, for the last couple months at least, that hasn't happened.

My current collection is:
Slysz Bowie
Native 5 G10
PM2 (was digicam, but I just dyed the scales black)
Dragonfly 2 in FRN
Dragonfly 2 in G10

So, am I crazy? Is there some Spyderco that might be staring me in the face that I just haven't noticed? (Note, I tried a Manix 2 once but I just wasn't feeling it).
Or, if I'm not crazy, has anyone else hit a similar point of stasis or edc "perfection"?

I understand completely. I have bought 31 spydies in the past year and I sold 15 of them. Just bc you like one now doesn't mean you won't like it later on and just bc you hate one now doesn't mean you won't end up liking it later on too. Just hang in there and enjoy the ride. The ebbs and flows!

You're not crazy. Congrats really. Being content is what life's all about. I recently hit the wall as well so to speak. I've probably picked up about ten different Spydies this year and just sent back a HAP40 Delica because I've already got two D4's. I really want to use all my knives and not collect them. The Military I got this year changed it for me. Its so good at so much it makes me question hanging on to some of the knives I own. That said it made me quite curious about the PM2 (haha). I've been making some trades but trying to not purchase for the thrill. For some impulsive and addictive behavior is more of a struggle than for others. I try to keep that in check...

Currently:
Military plain Jane at work (outdoors)
Caly 3.5 ZDP goes to town

The rest I'm hanging on to for now, because I know the itch will come. And what better way to scratch it - with what you already have.

Thanks for the post. Inspiring really.

It's good to maintain some perspective when purchasing knives as well. With the sprint runs it's easy to fall into the mindset that every knife is a must have, when in reality steel is steel and there's only so much time in a day to carry and enjoy your knives. I was doing well with not purchasing new stuff, until the HAP40 delica dropped. My wife being a UT alum I had to get the burnt orange. I do think I'm going to start selling off any knives that aren't being carried.

Interesting that this post should come up now.

I decided at the end of 2014 that I would consider other brands of knives than Spyderco for the coming year. So in 2015, I bought a Sebenza, several Benchmades, a few cheap Chinese knock off models and one solitary Spyderco--a plain jane Endura. Now, after a year of sampling other brands and several years of purchasing mostly Spydercos, I'm sort of burnt out on buying any new knives right now. Fact is, nothing I've seen lately really gets me interested like the knives I've already bought. Like VermontEdge, I still look at knives online but I find nothing I'm willing to buy. Maybe it's consumerism overload or maybe it's just satisfaction with what I already have. We'll see what 2016 brings but, for now, I'm also taking a pause.

some time last year!i got on board with spyderco knifes, before that never even new they where around! i think i started with the lower end ones!like the native's in FRN delica, then moved to higher end native 5/G-10 then slowly went to manix 2,PM2's and top of line brad southard, gayle bradley 1)domino,i have lots of double's of these with about 27 spyderco's in total, right from the start my thinking was,i had to own a collection! if anyone ask me why, don't no if i have an

The had the same revelation years ago when it came to flashlights.

Nope not crazy. In all honesty if all I had were my Dragonflies, Pac Salts, and Dominos... I would be set for edc folders. But I really like gear and I had to explain to my wife once that edc and hiking/camping gear is my form of expression. I don't wear any jewelry other than a wedding band and I have no tattoos. I don't wear fancy clothes and I rock a shaved head. It's all about my gear. :D

Folders, I allow myself whatever will fit in a Pelican 1300(About 20). Fixed blades are unfortunately a whole other hole in the wallet issue.:p

If you have achieved contentment with those folders then good for you mate.
The Slysz Bowie is great isn't it, that's my most recent 'I need that' Spyderco. For now I'm reasonably content, though I know I will get a few more in time.

IMO, if you haven't tried a Military, you should. You may not agree and fair enough, it just stands out to me as missing in your line up.

However, what I'm now feeling the urge for is custom scales for some of my folders...

Totally normal, it's a good feeling having all of your knife NEEDS met , long may it last . Keep fighting the thoughts of WANT rather than needs , wish I could do this , but I am getting better, right what knifes to buy for 2016 :D Best of luck Faron.

I'm set as well. I spent a lot of money last year on knives and have sold off a couple to thin the collection. The truth is 99% of my knives just sit.

There are a couple discontinued models I will always keep an eye out for but no new knives this year.... well maybe a Native but I will have to sell something else.

I'm pausing, for many reasons, and with me just getting the s110v paramilitary 2 I shouldn't need another knife for a while

I know what you mean, though this has come and gone a few times for me now. I know that the creative folks at Spyderco will eventually come up with something that will create that urge once again. My current drawn is to sharpening. Looking at stops, compounds, and alternative sharpening systems and such. It never ends! ...but I enjoy it.

Enjoy it! :)

Like speedseeker said, it comes and goes, for me as well.

There are a few models that I am waiting on, so I have paused purchasing for a short time at least until they are produced and released.
But, overall, I do feel quite fortunate and happy to have the models that I do have.
It's a very good thing when one can take a step back and realize and appreciate what they do have and use, and not let materialistic desires get out of control and give in to the gimme gimme gimmies.
