I volunteered to pull French Broom, an invasive plant at my local park today. They provide tools, but I wanted a tool that could chop in case they didn't have one. I have a 12" CS barong machete, but I didn't want to appear threatening. So I brought my CS Special Forces Shovel instead. That was a good call. We were given these steel weed pullers, which worked really well. Sometimes the brush had to be hacked back to get near the roots, so out came the shovel. Sometimes the stems broke off, so the roots needed to be excavated. It worked well. One of the park workers (packing a Fiskars brush hook), commented on how "cute" my shovel was. That might have made Lynn Thompson cringe, but it appeared totally benign. While is not a great hatchet nor machete, it was the right tool for the job today.

Good mini review ,thats what I would call it. I do construction and we have to clear bushes and brush sometimes and I would love to use my Scrapyard Dogfather for these times but I think of the homeowners/passers by and just use crappy trimmers and whatnot ;it is nice to know I can have another tool that will do the job without freaking out the sheep. Did it seem too heavy for what it is or did the weight help in use?

Good call. Most folks don't realize that the roots need to come out or chaparral type flora will grow back quickly if all you do is cut off the above-ground part. They are designed to grow back from their root stems after a fire.

And thanks for posting your experience.

The weight was good in this case for chopping some woody stems. It felt nice to swing full force.
