Cheryl and I hiked back into the White Mtn Wilderness this morning

to check storm damage in an area ravaged by fierce winds and storms last winter. It's one of my favorite hunting areas, so time to start scouting for the coming season. Lots of blow-down and dead fall, but the day was gorgeous. Behind me are the roots of a mighty spruce taken by the storms:

Some time ago I decided on my basic battery for dayhiking. Basic 5 if I'm staying on trail, and off trail a Basic 7 because of the greater risk of needing to build shelter in a storm or making splints/travois in case of injuries. Today was largely off-trail, even though basically a mild "walk in the woods" by any standard, so by habit it was the seven. This was our departure point from Crest Trail No. 25 of the Sacramento Mtns--up and over the ridge in the background into a gnarly canyon where the big bulls like to hang:

I LOVE living in the Rocky Mountains. :D

Life is good. :)

That's just so cool Will. That tree behind you that's broke off is huge as well as that rootwad. Must have been a heck of a storm.
Looks like a beautiful day for a hike and thanks for sharing.

Please mentor me on how I can make money and live there. I've got to get out of the city....the modern world is killing me.

Thanks for sharing, Will.

Gorgeous Will !

Looks like a great day.

Ditto on the "I LOVE living in the Rocky Mountains"

Great pics. Kind of made me sad, though. For the last 11 year or so, I have been living where there are forests and Mountains right there. Now, they are about 1 1/2 hours away. I am in central Washington, so mostly desert and farmland.

This +1!

I like the shot with the ball of roots, that must have been a good sized tree. Thanks for sharing!

Killer Pics Will ! ! ! ! !

That rootball is wild!

Very cool. . . .

Awesome pics and beautiful country. How hard is it to get elk tags Will?:)

Oh man, that is absolutely beautiful Will. I'm really happy for you guys and a little bit jealous to be sitting in the Texas heat and humidity :)

In the White Mtn Wilderness Area it's ridiculous. It's a Quality Hunt area which means access is severely restricted. Only about 100 tags, 80% to residents, 12% to outfitters/guides, and 8% (only 7-8 tags total) to non-guided non-residents. My draw success has only been about 50% even as a resident.

South of here about 65 miles at the southern end of the Sacramento range, it's not as tough to get drawn and there are some trophy bulls taken there, but it's so easy to scout and stay familiar with the stuff in my own "back yard" that I continue to draw here. The seasons are so short anyway (only 5 days, which is typical in the Rocky Mtn states) and my scouting time really gives me the feeling of hunting that I relish so much and adds to the portion of the year I can enjoy that experience even if I'm not carrying a rifle.

The trail head into the area shown in the pictures above is only 15 miles and about 30 minutes from my house, and I'll average hiking once a week from June through October. BTW, we're at 7,280 ft elevation at the house here (for reference exactly 2000 ft higher than Mile High Stadium :D) and the trailhead starts from about 10,200 ft. and goes up. It's about two miles from the trailhead to the sign in the photo above, which is where the hunting "starts".

Thanks again to all who have posted for your compliments--nice to know I'm among kindred spirits. :D
