A special request from a forumite, and a combination of
learning oportunities.....

A 234 layer twist 1095/15N20, hollow ground serpentine dagger, with
a somewhat ornate African Blackwood handle. Also a leather covered wood
sheath with NS throat and tip.

Well displayed through the efforts of Chuck Ward...

....hope you guys enjoy.

Thanks Peter. I hope to do many more integrals down the road.

Hi Murray,
Thanks for the reminder.......
The blade is 10" X 1", and just over 3/16" thk at the ricasso.
The handle is 5", including the bolster area.
The ferrule is double twist, and was soldered to the bolster
to form a socket for the handle to fit into...

The Blackwood was coated with tung oil. and hand buffed.
The steel recieved several cycles of etching/hand polishing
also.

The sheath body is black oak, and the 5 oz leather is hand stitched up
the back. The NS fittings were constructed to form small channels
to allow for the seam to fit without being compressed.

Russ, I see more intergals in your future. This one really rocks!

A lot of planning went into this...really like the bolster/ferrule/handle design. Your damascus is just awesome.

Great work!

Wow, what a great way to start 2011! That is a stunning piece Russ - just wonderfully elegant and flowing lines. And the wood-covered sheath definitely elevates the total package. Impressive work. Hopefully the lucky new owner will chime in and tell us a bit about what inspired the order.

Roger

PS - Let's enjoy a larger look:

Pleasure seeing it and thanks for the larger picture Roger.

Absolutely beautiful lines and materials. A real joy to behold!

Splendid work, Russ. Congratulations to the forumite who came up with the special request.

Really nice work Russ. Another fine example of the diversity of your body of work. I think most will agree it is always a treat when you post a new knife.

I have always had a love of Middle Eastern edged weapons. That love lead me to place an order with Russ for a Persian style knife. At the start, I sent Russ a photo of a knife made by Kevin Harvey that had much of what I was looking for, but the handle was not shaped right for me. Russ and I bounced some ideas off each other and this is what came from it.

The knife is still with Chuck, so I can only go by previous experience and photos in stating that I am immensely impressed. The lines flow beautifully, and the twist pattern turned out to be an excellent choice.

Russ mentioned this being a learning experience. Unlike some people, I like to take makers out of their comfort zone as long as they are excited by the project. Russ was very receptive to take on this project, and as I knew he would, produced a fantastic creation. This is a knife I find to be artistically beautiful, elegant and refined.

Below is the Kevin Harvey knife.

Thanks, Russ. You have once again lived up to my very high expectations.

That is a beautiful knife, It really has style. The twist Damascus is great.

Love it. Can you show a view of the opening of the sheath with and without the knife in it?

Scotchleaf.
The sheath opening wasn't photographed seprately, but I'll
try to describe...

The opening is shaped to closely match the cross section of the
bolster area, and is opened all the way through the 1/8 " NS
throat top. The wooden sheath opening is shaped to be the reverse
of the front of the bolster...so the front of the bolster area passes
through the throat top, and limits/fits against the inner shape of the
sheath opening.....

Congrats to Russ and Keith on a great collaboration.

Russ, that's some great grinding and an impressive package.

Thank you for letting us have a look.
