I quite often get asked if I do any sort of thumb studs when I do knives for folks and the answer untill now has always been "not really, no".
I was putting an edge on my Umnumzaan when I had a moment of inspiration. After the initial pain of thought wore off
I went and made one of these. This one is made from black G-10 and as you can see has the o-ring set in to it.
I have been using this one for a little over a week and it's worked fine so far. I made it more of an oval shape just to try and make it a little different from the original thumb disk and also to make it a bit more stream lined. The o-ring does add traction and softens the feel of it quite well. (obviously on the Umnumzaan the o-rings work as shock absorbers as the thumb studs work as the stop pin on that knife) That is not the case here but the idea when doing stuff for knives is to make something different. I'll need to see how they hold up over a couple of months of use before I offer them on the knives I do though, also they are rather nippy to make given they have to be done totally by hand.
