Here you go. A sticky (see above) to post 'stuff' you don't have to worry as much about me getting on you. You will still need to follow forum rules. No cussin'. No name callin'. No sellin' or service of knives for cash. Try to keep politics and religion arguments out of the fray. An example would be the thread on raising chickens. I know David worked at having photos of Buck knives as he talked about his 'stock'. He can now show chickens but not make a extra special effort to have a Buck knife in every photo. BUT, other knives are not welcome to talk about or show if not in a context of some historical event. You can say you carried a Kabar in 'Nam' but no 10 photos and 20 pages of texts about them. If you carried a 120 that would be OK.

Lets see how this works out. If it gets too wild I will get out my hatchet.....300

Can anybody translate what 300Bucks wrote for me?

I've always been ridiculously uncool.
(But I have a Buck Brahma 119B so I have that going for me.....)

Uni, Let's get on same page. What have I written for/to you ? To best of my knowledge, I have not written to you at all. I am in as confused a state as you are ?

This is a thread announcing a Sticky has been created in the Buck Forum Sticky area to discuss stuff that may not fit the rules of being always about Buck knives.

Craig, I don't think unimogbert was saying that what you wrote was directed to him. I think he was just asking for clarification.

Unimogbert, I think I know what the purpose is....

This forum is supposed to be about the discussion of Buck knives only. There are two problems with that. First, it's common for threads to drift. So, somebody like me who likes to backpack might start a thread about taking a Buck knife on a backpacking trip and next you know, the conversation has drifted into a discussion about different camp stoves. The Svea 123 is the best camp stove ever made, just in case you're wondering and this sentence is an example of how easy it is for a thread to drift "off-topic".

The second thing that can happen is the people become friends and it's super easy for friends to use the forum to discuss things that friends like to discuss like giving updates on the status of, say, Oregon's recent house fire. IMO, it's critically important for both Oregon and his friends on this forum to be able to talk about that strategy and do be able to do so here, in the forum where their friendship was formed and is based. But technically, it is officially "off-topic".

The solution that the Traditional forum has worked out (and many other forums have used the same approach) is to create a seperate forum or thread just for "off-topic" discussion.

I have pretty thick skin and have a pretty high tollerance for off-topic banter, but I also see the wisdom in this approach, particilularly in the long-term. 300Bucks is applying a well-proven, tried and true approach and it's one that appears to be well accepted and preferred by the site's super-mods and owner, so I would advocate that we give him our full support in the transition.

I'll be the opposition on this new sticky...

Over the few years I've been participating here, I've read numerous requests for new stickies that would contain a variety of different information. A sticky all about the 300 series, or the fixed blade 100s, or a sticky strictly for Buck reviews, and many other requests that would be an asset to the members here. All were denied because the powers that be didn't want the clutter or didn't want the whole first page to be pinned threads.

Yet, we get an "off-topic" sticky where random happenings, potentially unrelated to anything Buck-like will be immortalized?

Reworded- Can anybody translate what 300Bucks wrote so that I can understand it?

Is he asking for a picture of my livestock or my bicycle or what I carried when I went to 'Nam?

There were some words about a sticky in there too but it wasn't named.

There's always some poor SOB who doesn't get the word. That might be me.

A Sticky is highlighted in yellow, has a picture of a folder, is located on the main Buck Knives page at the top. Always at the top so you can get to it quickly. Sticky is also a bun, a sticky bun, but that does not apply here.

If you wish to talk about something that is not related to Buck knives BUT do want to speak to the Buck people commonly found in this area of Blade Forums, this is where you post your question or comment.

I like the idea of the new sticky, I think it will be fun. But I don't think David's Farm thread would have fit this format well. I don't think one thread can handle several in depth topics at the same time well. I hope it's okay to keep some off the wall kind of things separate and on their own provided they mention/display Buck and come back on target quickly. I haven't been here long, but it didn't take long to associate certain people with Buck knives to the point where they are interchangeable. It's not a matter of whether you have a Buck knife with you, but which one.

Lets see if I can answer all questions in a limited writing....ha.
First, Uni look above at the yellow boxes above the regular forum. There is one you now can go to or comment about stuff with the moderator giving you plenty of rope to discuss things of interest. Following regular forum rules, I will not be bothering folks to keep on track and always have a Buck knife theme to their post. Lets call it a Liberal Buck Thread.

Two, having a bunch of limited Stickies, funnels discussion where you might concentrate on only the those things you are interested in, but makes this Buck forum more like a dictionary than a field of discussion. I may not post on threads about 110s but I have always read them and enjoyed the knowledge I gained. Historically, that has always been the case.

This new sticky is a effort by me to moderate between those that are knife specific and those that enjoy a little drifting of thread themes ( you don't get to hear the gripes on my PMs). Some drifting here in the regular Buck forum is still OK but I would hope you would take discussions such as which mountain is the best hiking with your Buck knife on your hip to the new sticky area. You can still post a hiking story or photo with a Buck knife but to compare mountains for 25+ posts needs to go on the new area.

As mentioned this method has been successful in other forums so we can try it a while and if the Buck National Committee wishes to vote out the sticky then we can do that also. I am hoping this makes my volunteer position as moderator have less conflict in keeping knife talk on the general forum going in the right direction.

I've been using forums for at least 20 years now and am very familiar with forum drift and what stickies are.

But I've not encountered an announcement about corralling forum drift that was so difficult to decrypt.

But I'm an Engineer. I'm hard of understanding.

So here's what I think it says - 1. You guys are drifting too dang much. This forum is supposed to be about Buck knives.

2. Take your off topic stuff to the place I've created called The Anvil Shed. Its location is: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/s...-tall-tales-how-to-s-and-look-what-I-do-did-s

3. Thank you for your support.

Obligatory Buck content: I own more Buck brand knives than any other. Bought 4 Paklites for kitchen steak knives.

You're doing a thankless job. They don't pay you enough. Your work is appreciated!

Yes, we are now in the double digits with stickeys. But I'll see how this goes. As we may need it for some. DM

Beautiful bike LV!

But this thread isn't the immortal one. This thread will sink to the bottom of the ocean of threads to be resurrected many years down the road. And the perpetrator of such an unforgivable act will suffer the criticism of a few who frown upon such reckless acts.

No... This isn't the thread to immortalize the off-topic banter... That thread is at the very top of the pile of stickies. The first in a long line of opportunities to communicate amongst these great Buck enthusiasts.

Poetic, I know...
