A plea to Sal and Spyderco

I've been looking hard, VERY hard at everything for a new EDC. I've read the recent talk about the "to be announced" ocelot, and all I can say is WOW!!!

I saw the preproduction pics of the limited edition ocelot, with it's forest green G10 grips, slightly smaller and slenderized compared to the Wegner Sr. Again, WOW!

I also read your post, Sal, that the plan was for FRC for the grip, and that's where the plea comes in. Please, PLEASE, don't do that to a very classy yet thoroughly functional knife! One of the most endearing aspects of the Wegners have been the grippy and stylish G10 grips. For all purposes, especially outdoor/wet activities the slip resistance of the G10 would make a huge difference.

If the dice have been already cast, as it were, please consider a second version of this knife with G10 grips. I think you'd find even at a slightly higher price point, it would easily outsell the FRC version, and not just by the forumites. :)

Considering the unavailability of the Wegner Jr, and the likely discontinuation of the Wegner Sr, having a nice mid length knife with a step up, rather than down, in quality would be great.

Me personally, well, as the Wegner Sr is a bit large for my needs, and the Vesuvius, while a nice knife, doesn't have a grip that feels good in the hand (to me). So at this time I'm looking at other options. I am VERY much interested in a knife as similar to the prototype as possible though, WOW again.. :)

Thanks for all your time and bandwidth.

Sincerely,
Cedric

End of plea/Rant? :p

Note: After reading through all that, I look like a whiner. :p So, please just try and make a G10 version. Thanks. :) Oh, and I don't think anyone in the forum so far has commented that they'd -prefer- FRC. :D

Couldn't agree more. I have found myself in a state of deep depression since the large Wegner has been discontinued. My only hope is that the Impala may be a suitable replacement.

While I anxiously await the FRN version a g-10 version would be nice as well. I have an Ocelot prototype :D but don't want to carry it.

I'm jealous Shootist! However, I can't justify $350 for a EDC. Anyone got a winning lottery ticket they just don't have a good home for?

My wife loves animals and Spydercos, so she was very excited when I told her about the original concept for the Ocelot. And she was disappointed when I told her the decision had been made to only produce it in FRN.

...so I bought my wife one of the Ocelot prototypes for Christmas. She was shocked and overjoyed! That knife has been in her pocket anytime she's left the house since the day she got it. It will be painful if the thing goes missing, but the pleasure she gets out of having and using it will make even that worthwhile.

All you hsve to do to carry one is ... Buy two!!

I got one at the Blade show last year. That one, Lynx #003, stays home. It cries and pitches fits to go out & play but I don't listen.

I got another to carry. If I can afford to pop for a custom carry, I can carry one of these. SOOOO, a green/black Ocelot has become my EDC on most days.

The foot prints make it a very people friendly knife. If anyone acts scared I just show the "cat feet" on the scales, talk about my cats, and soon they are thinking "cool knife."

I really have to agree with Cedric on this one. G-10 is so much better than FRN. I was all stoked to get a Vesuvius, then noticed that the handle was FRN. Bummer. G-10 is definitely the way to go.

Yeah, I don't know if you've seen one in person or not, but it's an interesting design. I was curious about it until I held one, then, it just wasn't quite comfortable in my hand. The hard plastic had a lot to do with that.

Hi Cedric. We hear your plea. I think that ime will tell if the demand is there. The cost of machining G10 for a compression lock is very high. The costs diffrerence would not be slight, probably close to double.

Jeff wanted to make the knife in FRN for the following reasons;

1. We could put a good steel into the piece and still keep it affordable.

2. The "pugs" appeal to a variety of markets in addition to the the hunting market. Many of whom will not pay the price for a G10 version.

3. Tim would like to see a larger volume sold.

I think you will like what comes out. If the demand is there, variations are always possible as long as they are financially feasible.

Thanks for taking the time to reply Sal. I guess as an end user, rather than a knifemaker, it's hard for me to see the immense difference in price that G10 in a compression style would demand.

I'm looking forward to the result, and I do like the pugs. :) Even though I prefer G10, a well designed FRN would still attract me, as evidenced by my new BM mini-griptilian purchase. <-- can I say that in the Spyderco forum??? ;)
